More news about Jose Salvador Alvarenga

Castaway from Mexico: First photos of Jose Salvador Alvarenga's boat
Photographs emerge of small damaged boat on which fisherman Jose Salvador Alvarenga apparently spent 13 months floating across the Pacific

Mr Alvarenga's boat, about 24-feet long, was empty aside from a small blue container into which Alvarenga would hide to seek shelter from the sun. It was emblazoned with the name Camaroneros de la Costa, apparently the fishing co-operative for which Alvarenga worked in Mexico.

I don't disagree regarding the corned beef, I can get pretty indiscriminate about grazing if it is in short supply. That usually has something to do with prepackaged goods. Most grazing in the wild is pretty edible.

For all you know Xiquel was a meat eating atheist. Cept' couldn't stand eating anything raw…allergic to beaks.

For all you know Alvarenga was a vegetarian, who suddenly had a taste for webbed feet. we know already he's religious.
Yup...not enough info to conclude anything.

Alvarenga and Xiquel were on the same boat in the same situation.
Alvarenga survived 13 months and Xiquel died after 4 weeks

The “Will to Live” is very strong for some and as shown here in this extreme offshore survival situation. This “Will to Live” truly made a difference in Alvarenga case.
-------------------------------------------
I interviewed two co-workers this morning to understand this a little better.

My vegetarian co-workers was raised from childhood with a devout vegetarian mom and he told me that in an extreme offshore survival situation like this he would most likely have reluctantly done what Alvarenga did to survive. He said his “Will to Live” would have made this possible.

My co-workers with religious believe’s that do not allow eating of anything with a heartbeat told me that in an extreme offshore survival situation like this his religion allows for fasting and death (not suicide) and that is most likely what he would do.
Ya but that's a bit of a stretch to reach a conclusion that the kid died because of this or that. Then to drag religion into it...come on!

...again...this isn't about someones belief system. If you have an axe to grind, start a "I hate religion threat".

Might be the will to live or some of us don't have enough sense to lay down and die. Everyone wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die.

Thing is, we don't know the whole story on how he couldn't keep seagull down.

Doesn't mean the threw up.

Could mean the other side of the coin if you get me stinky drift…

what a mess.

The sad fact is that everyone here has a Beginning and End.

Free only come once in life when you’re born. For the rest of your life you pay for it.

Important survival decisions were made here by two people and based on those decisions one person survived and one did not.

I have to disagree, in death is where your freedom is, no one can take that away from you.

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Recognize me now? Pacific castaway who claimed to have spent 14 months adrift at sea finally gets a haircut

1) Jose Salvador Alvarenga given haircut paid for by US Embassy

2) Reveals contemplated suicide while he was stranded at sea

3) Parents and daughter, 14, confirm identity and praise 'incredible' survival

4) Had emotional phone call with mother, father and brothers yesterday

5) Dr Roner Mendoza, who is treating him, said he has liver problems and edema - a swelling of the legs - which could explain his bloated appearance

6) New photo of young Alvarenga worlds apart from bloated figure now

7) Skeptics are questioning whether his broken-down boat could have traveled 8,000 miles in 14 months

8) Now staying in hotel, expected to fly out of the country on Friday

Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Thanks cotemar for sharing the news stories - even if only the Daily Mail!

Interesting is in the pictures where you can see his feet you can see how he barely has visible ankle bones from the swelling. That looks like fluid retention (edema) that would come from many health issues including long term starvation. I bet if we got a look under his shirt you would also see a swollen stomach.

I wonder if we will ever learn the whole story but it seems pretty clear to me that he was out there an enormous amount of time and is suffering from long term exposure and starvation.
