From all the comments, if the gentleman was taking down the main for some reason and it was found not tied up, him and his dog dead, sounds like a lightning strike to me.....just a guess on my part.

Never good to hear of these things.....

A month or two ago on my dock, an older guy fell off his boat and drowned. He was not strong enough to pull himself out of the water.

As boaters, we all have to be careful and look out for each other. Everyone learns from accidents but sometimes things can not be helped.

I can see the rescue operators discussing who are the lucky ones to go down and retrieve those ripe petunias. It will be a most unpleasant task.

Dogs can survive much longer without water than a human can. Dogs have also been known to eat cadevars to stay alive.

If it was a lightning strike why would the bodies be down inside the cabin? We had a whole boy scout troop dropped in their tracks while climbing Mount Whitney on the eastern side of the Sierras some years ago. You drop where you are standing. It is obvious he was dealing with the mainsail when interrupted by "something"

It will be interesting story to follow. I tend to think it was a hear attack and dog died much latter. The ship's log hopefully will be retrieved. RIP Frenchy and his faithful canine. Heart attacks are not a bad way to depart this life.

That's a good sized boat. If no one went aboard, whos to say there are not other bodies on the boat?

A small sail boat sank in the FLA Keys in the summer of 2014 after a lightning storm past through the area. After the storm moved away, a sailboat was observed sinking. The captain was a young guy and his mother reported him missing pretty quickly and since the boat was seen sinking its location was sorta known. The boat was found with sonar and eventually divers went down over 300 feet to find remains inside the boat. A DNA sample was taken but I have never heard the results. It was pretty obvious that this was the missing boat.

Nobody will ever know for sure, but the most likely cause of death and the boat sinking was a lightning strike. There is only so much you can do with a lightning storm but go below, and with a 25 foot long boat, I would not think there are many places that would be safe from a lightning hit.

Dan, it will be interesting to see if we get any further information on the untimely demise of this sailor. Understand your point and it certainly is a viable opinion. I am betting on heart attack and lightning strike second...smile

Man died first, dog tried to back at port but got sick too (maybe from contaminated food can), he tried VHF a couple time but nobody understand dog spell... so he engage autopilot and died.. sound possible right???

Add "stroke" to your short list of possible causes. You can have a stroke while awake or asleep. It can knock you down like a hammer, or it can take time and fully paralyze you, leaving you conscious or unconscious and in either case, unable to move one or both sides, so even getting down a companionway would become impossible.

Not a "heart attack" but an entirely different matter and a significant killer.

If the bodies were found below, my first guess would be carbon monoxide poisoning.

Yep, more information is needed. If the dog was not in the equation, heart attack/health issue would be number one guess. Even with the dog, I would still think a health issue is the cause of the man's demise.

Sad whatever the cause. Flip side, it is better to die doing what he wanted than chained to a desk.....
