Malware Warning

I do not know whether this message is Kosher on this Forum or not but as at least a few members here are also subscribers to the Sailnet site I thought I would make mention of the fact that Sailnet's forum site seems to be infected with a particularly malicious virus of some type or another. I usually look at this forum and the Sailnet site in the morning while I'm waiting for the coffee to brew-up and this AM when I went to the Sailnet site our home system's anti-virus alarms went crazy. One of those situations where the only recourse is to cut the power to the computer to stop things. Right now that machine is in "Safe Mode" with several different anti-virus programs running to try and clean it out and it occurred to me I should mention the problem to others who might also be exposed.

If this post is not allowed, I apologize and I assume the Moderators will dispose of it in due course.

FWIW...

I will confirm the Sailnet sight was blocked by my anti-virus software this morning.

FWIW...
Despite multiple levels of blocking software (Avast, Spy-bot, Malwarebytes etc.) something has suddenly appeared on the desktop of our home system entitled:

0.31305537436497777.exe

Our scans continue....

Re: Malware Warning

I got a warning message from Google, but when I went to their (Google's) site to see what the problem was, it didn't (or couldn't) identify one. I'm also on a Mac. Couldn't get to the Sailnet site through Google, though.

Re: Malware Warning

A number of high volume BBs have been hit with trojans and malware over the past month originating from India and Russia including a number of universities and government sites. UCONN's website was down 8 days and a number of personal computers were wiped out.
For Cruisers this is a significant threat especially if you're cruising the internet on a computer that manages navigation and/or radio communications. Backups are really and most important as many antivirus programs can miss a virus if the default settings are not set "strong" enough. Scanning after infection rarely picks up malware or phishing programs that have infected your computer as the writers have anticipated this and make their "programs" invisible to virus scanners. If you have a "paid for" antivirus product, the only way to make sure is to go to your product's official site and scan with their online scanner. To cover one's butt, a better backup is a mirror/bootable image you can either store off boat as we do, or have two; one for an emergency boot disk if all fails, stored onboard and another stored elsewhere. Of course, if the backup is infected.... Norton Ghost (or similar for PC), and Carbon Copy Cloner for Mac are good products.

Re: Malware Warning

Thanks for the warning, svHyLyte! I'm sure quite a few CF members also frequent SailNet from time to time, so your taking the time to let us know about the problem is appreciated.

Re: Malware Warning

this is a great reason not to use computer for navigation that is used to surf net. keep your systems separate.

Absolutely. Once I get back on the water will keep at least two laptops. One with Nav only with no other software installed and no connection to the internet. A second for internet access but with full Nav software installed and ready as a backup for the primary Nav system.
