'Luck' Has Nothing to Do with it...

Had an interesting visit this morning... as I'm presently tyed to the end tye of the dock, you cant get any further out than i am..
This guy, mid 50s walked up to the boat while I was doing a little work on the Bimini, and mentioned that he had heard that we had sold the business and were getting ready to head out again..
As we talked, He stated "HOW LUCKY WE WERE TO GO CRUISING"..
And it wasnt until a couple hours later that while telling the wife of this guys visit, That we both started to chuckle..
We pulled into the Marina just over a year ago after cruising for the last 6 years.. Opened the canvas shop, (now I'm not experanced at canvas work, but the wife is a seamstress, and I'm a building inspector with a fabrication in steel background)..
Worked out a deal with the owner of the Marina and dumped 5k out for rent for the year of the building, another 2k for a used machine..
So, we're in business..
12 hours a day for each of us, 7 days a week for over a year..
we watched our pennies, and over the year, banked over 40k..And just last week, we got our money back out of the business and sold it for 10k
So when someone says we're LUCKY, I chuckle as luck has nothing to do with it.......We worked our butts off for the last year and earned enough to keep us on the water for another 4 years pluss........
Theres two types of people in this world, Dreamers, and Do-ers..
We'll be the ones out Cruising,

While we were cruising, we ran across a couple who, when told of our similar business experience, said we had no business profiting from our hard work. We should have put all the profits into paying our employees bonuses!

G'Day Randy, and all you other "lucky" cruisers

We've often had the same comments directed at us, and have about the same reaction that you did. I suppose that being born when and where we were could be ascribed to luck, and our location certainly helped us getting into sailing, but the years of hard work, and living well below our means was crucial.

As my old dad used to say "the harder you work, the luckier you get".

Cheers, and well done, mate.

Have you ever realized your money goes a little further when spent,
the harder you worked for it in the first place..................

There is all kinds of "luck", good and bad. Starting with the "lucky sperm club". Some people work like slaves all their lives, live very spiritual lives, and never get anywhere in a financial way. Then again some people just fall into the rose garden so to speak. Most of us are somewhere in between.

Whatever, enjoy your good fortune, you lucky dog...

Yeah, I've heard that one before. Tell the guy working hard every day, maybe at 2 or 3 jobs, for minimum wage. Tell the guy who saved all his life for his retirement only to have it stolen by some sleaze in NYC or some other financial center.

Have you ever noticed that good luck is usually the result of advanced planning.

I don't believe in Luck, Destiny or Fate...but I do believe in "Your lot in life"...and its always changing.

And where ever that's at at the moment, your attitude is key as to rather its enjoyable for you or not.

Bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people...so I don't believe in Karma either.

Success is not a guarantee...We do the best we can with the information we have at the time..hind sight is 20/20...everything else is a crap shoot.

Im enjoying working..wish i had more of it so i could work harder..Im living for my family right now, I would not have it any other way...If I never make it cruising that will be my lot in life and I will figure out a way to enjoy that as well...Nothing wrong with keeping the dream alive though... Just doing it doesn't make one man superior over another...some times the superior man never get his shot.

Congrats Randy..Glad your getting yours...Hope our lots in life, cross paths some day.

Yes but Randyonr3. I think you're lucky...lucky to have that attitude...

Not everyone is AAA personality and has a thrill seeker gene built in, and runs guns to the Peoples Republic of Santa Cruz in a J22 with 2 broken wrists on his first sail.

Yeah, some a lot, others not so much.

Luck, Schmuck

Luck has nothing to do with it. Guts, ambition, risk, maybe. You get out of life what you put into it. If you want it bad enough there are many ways to get it.

Good for you guys.

Say what you will, I think luck plays a roll in it. Of course it sounds better if we call it chance. There are places where the economy is in the dumper right now and someone can work hard, be a good person, stand on their head and whistle dixie while blowing bubbles through a red hot piece of lead pipe ( ok maybe no-one can actually do that) and the way things ad up they don't make any money. Rich people aren't by definition hard working, good people nor are poor people lazy, stupid and bad. Sometimes it's just luck.

If you thnk it's otherwise I'd hazard a guess your luck has been decent.
