Wow, haven't been there since '81. Kowloon is a lot more built up and at that time you'd see about that many junks criss-crossing... I don't think I see one in the photo... looks like the same ferries though... Is that the RHKYC down there on the right, in white?

YES...thats it! Notice not many boats left at the Typhoon Shelter.

Unfortunately, there aren't many junks left anymore. There are a few big ones that are used by tourists. As you can see, construction and development is in full swing and the harbour is being filled in at an alarming rate....sad really.

Just posted because it was kinda cool to wake up to the sight of all the sails. Pic is a bit disappointing as by the time I decided to take the photo, most of the sailboats were at a distance.

Wow, no junks? We saw so many families on those things going back and forth. And the Typhoon Shelter is being dredged or is it being filled in? Where did all the yachts go? Do you ever get down to the yacht club? Maybe they have a photo of Mamamouchi II, she's the one I crewed on a thousand years ago.

Have they cleaned up the water? Last I was there we were strictly warned not to go swimming! Seeing all those folks hiking out on catamarans makes me wonder...

Not many....there are some junks and sampans over in Aberdeen. Most of the live aboard culture is gone since the early 90s.....many live ashore and use their boats during the day.

Much of the shelter has been temporarily reclaimed as a working area for construction of the Central-Wan Chai Bypass (the working for Route 4 Reengineering), an underground road.

Don't know where all the boats went....fishing has been declining for some time now.

I used to walk down to where the yacht club is before all the construction started....haven't gone inside but I will make a point of doing so soon. I'll let you know if I see the photo you mentioned.

I wouldn't swim in the harbour but there are people that do. People do swim at the beaches....Big Wave Bay, Repulse Bay etc. I personally like to go to the more remote beaches on Lantau Island but unfortunately, they're getting trashed, literally, by garbage dumped by Chinese vessels. Some days it's REALLY bad.
