Loonies Got Their Way

But NOT Seattle Metro...

https://ecology.wa.gov/Water-Shoreli...discharge-zone

This makes criminals out of people whose onboard systems are CLEANER than Seattle Metro's secondary treatment system, especially during big rain events when they have CSO's.

The hypocrisy is breathtaking.

There's going to be a lot of boats making the journey to poop on the Canadians.

Loonies Got Their Way

As a layperson it is confusing as to why (from an environmental perspective) discharge should be a problem.. you would think poop and urine would be pretty common place in our waterways and oceans. Understandable from a human perspective that people wouldn’t want other people poop floating past their boats.

Reading the article though it looks like this new legislation is just because it interferes with local business interests. There are shellfish farms in the area that are losing money because crops are being rejected for some reason related to the waste.

At least if I understood correctly.

Re: Loonies Got Their Way

Just had lunch Saturday with Mrs. Tellie on the Dania beach pier here just south of Ft. Lauderdale. A great view of thousands of beach goers as far as the eye can see in the water having a great day. Wonder how much pee and poo are created every day in this environment. My guess is far more than all the boats in the area do.

Re: Loonies Got Their Way

Not this again....

I've had my boat in a NDZ for 30 years and frankly, it's just not big deal. It isn't something I would moan about in public. Yes, combined sewers were a bad idea. Hopefully they are working on that too. But if someone else is speeding, that has nothing whatsoever to do with your responsibilities as a driver. Same thing. Yes, whales poop in the ocean, but they do not harbor human pathogens.

But does it really matter? Just quietly do your part and let other people do (or not do) their part.

Re: Loonies Got Their Way

Coming to a country near you soon............ Where one starts the other follows. I'm in the UK but it will come.

I find the hypocrisy amazing. You can discharge all the my grey soap, detergent, scum, washing up bits anywhere but not biodegradable faeces & water.

I discharge black holding out of an on deck device, or to sea through the hull. The heads discharge to sea or to the black holding tank. No one can see what is which.

Who is going to check? The sh*t police? Not a comment about whether the police are good or not.

Maybe the answer is to do all business in the Galley or over the rails - I will not look at someone on the pushpit or pulpit again, let alone wave!

Glad I'm in the UK, we don't have sh*t police - yet!

I eat what I catch. Don't **** where u eat seems reasonable to me and locking a Y-valve is not a hardship.

Microplastics I think will soon prove to be **very** serious, and prevention efforts will come far too late

Re: Loonies Got Their Way

It's all a matter of perspective...

How many sports anglers think any fishing regs/limits are necessary but complain about the commercial take?

Or that fishery science trumps their experience?

How many boaters think their garbage/trash doesn't matter because it is biodegradable, the ocean, but complain about marine trash, plastic gyres, or cruise ship garbage dumping?

How many boaters accept no-wake zones to protect manatees or coastal erosion, but complain about rude boat wakes.

How many cruisers willingly go the distance to get pumped out at a marina but want clean water?

Easy to denigrate those who support environmental regulation or conservation as "loonies" rather than address the substance of an issue.

We have enough hypocrisy to go around.

Re: Loonies Got Their Way

Seattle Metro discharge: 40 PPM.
THAT'S when it's not raining.

When we get a good rain, the "Combined Sewer Overflow", a PC term for "Here comes a few MILLION GALLONS OF POOP !" is considered a cost of doing business, and nothing happens. It's just a momentary embarrassment.

ElectroScan discharge: 2 PPM which costs an amp hour per flush.

And to answer the comment, "we're used to it" I'll bet you are.
Has Victoria BC ever gotten around to a secondary treatment plant, or are they still discharging their poop straight out in to the Straits of Juan de Fuca which is conveniently JUST West of the coming Washington state NDZ western border.
Is that PC or what?

If Washington state had drawn the NDZ line at the border all the way to the ocean, it would run right past Victoria's poop pipe.

Let's say by not using my ElectroScan which puts out 2 PPM and instead, I pump out at a marina during a big rainstorm.
The poop will come back out to Puget Sound in a CSO at a concentration of...let's just say a heck of a lot higher than 2PPM!
t
It might be better use of our politicians to find an answer to homeless people peeing and pooping on the sidewalks.
