Looking for a good sailing school

Greetings from the Bay Islands. My husband and I would like to take sailing lessons this January in north or central America, then bareboat charter in the BVI’s. Can anyone help us find a reputable, practical school for beginners or someone willing to teach some enthuastic want to be sailors? Our goal would be to learn to sail a monohaul and spend winters in the Bahamas cruising. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Bay Islands, Honduras?

If so, there is an ASA school right next door in Belize.

Run by a good friend of mine, former ASA Instructor of the Year, all 5-star ratngs on TripAdvisor.

Yes, Bay Islands Honduras. Belize would be a stones throw away, thanks for the recommendation.

Re: Looking for a good sailing school

If we are really searching for experience on a monohull to see if sailing is for us, are there any individuals (not neededing to be certified) who would hire out to allow us to spend time on their boat and train us?

Re: Looking for a good sailing school

Moorings/Sunsail in Placencia, Belize used to have a couple of monohulls in their fleet. Not sure if they still do. In the past Ive done instructional charters (sail training + charter) on their monos.

I dont live in Belize anymore, but I could probably arrange a local captain/instructor for you if wanted. Moorings can arrange a local captain if you just want a captain.

Another thought, is something could probably be arranged on the Rio Dulce in Guatemala. I used to live on the Rio, and have a friend there who is a charter captain/instructor.

Re: Looking for a good sailing school

Why not just go to Tortola and sign up for a week live-a-board with an ASA instructor at Sunsail or someone else that may have MH? That way you get a week to sail the BVI while learning. At the end of the week, you go home with a relaxed tan and an ASA book with 101 - 104 or 105 stamps.

Save yourself a lot of money and check out the crewing sites. I recoment Find a Crew or Crewbay. There are many people with boats cruising that could take you cruising as in the real world of cruising.I am sure while getting a real idea of the cruising life you will also save a lot of money.

We went to BVI and did Offshore Sailing School 101-104 in a week with private Instructor. Well worth it...but of course depends on who you get as instructor.
