Long-term Dry Storage

Wondering if anyone has experienced having to store their boat long term in dry storage in Florida/Caribbean, and if so, what kind of problems were associated with this when returning back to the boat to recommission her. We've have our boat on the hard for a year with at least another year to go before we get back and continue cruising. The engine is pickled, the interior is put away properly but I didnt do stuff like dissconnect the batteries or take off the halyards. Any suggestions or lessons learned would be helpful. I dont like thinking of the boat in the hot sun just baking.

There is alot of dfference between hibernation and simple closed storage. Most of it relates to system protection/integrity, heat/cold management, humidity control and protecton of the exterior UV ad polution. Boats should be adequately ventilated to manage mosture or closed completely with no leaks and dehumidified.

Bugs can also be a problem. I have hear of people using an inert dry gas inside the vessel like Argon to flood the spaces to cut out the potential for mold growth and it drives the bugs nuts.

Passive cooling techniques work well to control heat and UV. UV inhibitors help protect sensitive surfaces.

Systems need to be run occassionally or pickled completely to avoid drying out packings and seals. Electric motors do well in dry storage unless there is a mosture problem...then they need protection and routine servicing.

How much are you paying for dry storage and what kind of facility are you at?

Let m know if you have specific questions. Jimships@yahoo.com
