Life of a Sober Sailor

Considering leaving the mountains for the coast.
May buy a 30+ sailboat.
I have no objections to others drinking around me. Have done that at bars.
I had to quit.
Alcohol seems to be more common than diesel fuel around boats.
Wondering whether I can have a social life afloat.

Sure, many cruisers hang out places have meetings. La Paz, Puerto Vallarta, etc. Just pick your friends and acquaintances appropriately.

Doesn't it seem that alcohol seems more common when:

playing cards
after golfing
after sailing
spectating sports
at parties (holiday, birthday, dinner, engagement, etc)

Have you ever let that stop you before? Did you feel there was no social life?

Like any subculture, you'll find people that fit the full rest of the spectrum of society, from the sober to the drunk. You'll fit in with the ones you enjoy. =)

My brother’s doctor told him to stop drinking.

Don't fret about it Chas mate.
I don't drink, not for any moral reason, my body just doesn't tolerate it. Hasn't hampered my sailing social life in any way at all.
Having said that, when everyone else is plastered it's time for me to take my leave, and go read in my cabin.

Well, it depends on where you look. Some sailors drink too much, some drink at times, others hardly ever or not at all. Pick your dock.

Same here. Think I was 28 before I realized that everyone did not drink until drunk.

I've had times that I drink and times that I don't. The choice has never seemed to have an affect on socializing. The question that becomes critical is wether a person can retain their ability to behave as they wisely choose. Take the path that makes you strong!

In my cruising experience the fleet is often a mixed lot with regard to drinking. The hard drinkers tend to do little else and stick together. Most of us are social drinkers and have a drink or two in the evening, but often shared with folks who are not drinkers. It is very typical that cruisers bring their own drinks when invited over, so as not to deplete limited supplies of whatever the host boat has. So, bring your own beverage, and nobody will notice or care. I'll never forget being invited over to a tiny 20-something-foot sailboat that a family was living on, and one of the young children lifted a floorboard, rummaged around, and offered me his last can of root beer. I think we split it among four of us. Boaters are an eclectic lot--they drink almost everything, and often nothing.

If ya drink on my boat ya better bring your own! Cus if ya don't ya better like Real Dark thick 150 proof RUM cus thats all we have aboard !! For medical reasons of course !!!
