LBI/Barnegat bay anchorages?

anyone have experience finding a quiet harbor on long beach island (LBI), NJ that would handle a 49' Hylas with a 7' draft (and 60' mast)? Although i'd love to be near Surf City, i don't think i can make it up the barnegat bay channel, so may need to be either down near the barnegat light house, or up by beach haven. given the rough ocean surf, would think i'd need to find a protected harbor somewhere on the island? any thoughts?

tx!

With your draft, you may want to plan for the anchorage by Barnegat Light rather than picking your way through for miles, especially if you're planning on this to do soon. Considering Superstorm Sandy, you may want to seek some local knowledge from TowBoatUS or the like. Best of luck, and happy cruising!

Waterway Guide has it right, you won't make it past the inlet with that draft. For anything over 6' of draft, there is no " inside " in NJ. There are also vertical limitations. Your choises are Sandy Hook, just inside of Manasquan, just inside of Barnegat, Atlantic City and Cape May.

I grew up on LBI in Brant Beach, where much of my family still lives. Your draft won't get you far on the Barnegat Light side. And on te Beach Haven end you probably can't get in the Beach Haven inlet. AC maybe?

We would love to travel up there on our boat but the prospects are pretty poor.

The bars and shoals have shifted pretty badly here. I took my conter console out too look at some salvage work and puttering along in the channel I ran aground several times. Until the C.O.E. dredges and gets it back to normal I would say wait a bit. Even without the storm if you venture a few feet outside the channel your screwed. Inside could be 8 feet and literally forms a solid cliff where the shoulder of the channel will be 3 foot.
