Who is responsible for their own protection? You are. If you can prevent from becoming a victim than you should you use any thing at your disposal to protect yourself and your family. You cannot trust that some law enforcement agency or government is going to be there to rescue you. You run into pirates in open water the deck is already stacked in their favor, they don't care about any laws and you bet your life on those written laws to protect you and your loved ones. How sad we have all become.

Re: LATEST PIRATE NEWS

I just saw this on Yahoo, looks like a re-write from Christian Science Monitor.

I dont really have an opinion on it but thought it was worth a share for this thread.

Peace.

Re: LATEST PIRATE NEWS

I would like for some of these navys use some of thier training fleet of sailboats as bait in these areas with the right kind of sailers like navy and marines and yes their is females ones also so pirates would think just a sailboat with lets say 4-6 people then find out they have meet their maker. I know we do have the sailboats and if not the price to buy a small fleet is a small price to pay. Also the crew would have a great learning time as we know that 2-3 mos on a 40-50 sailboat. the crew would have help a short distance away. if helo was onboard help in mins that would put a slowdown or even stop them

It would be interesting to know/hear more stories of people who have still done the Red Sea passage. I sometimes wonder what the odds are because we normally just hear about attacks etc.

Is there a way to get data from the Suez Canal for yachts etc.

“There has been a quantum increase in the number of private armed security contractors being deployed by the shipping industry, and they have had to date a 100 percent success rate preventing hijacks,

The above paragraph in the article says all that needs to be said about the problem.

Is there any need for further "discussion" on this issue?

Even more so. Now that the private security on freighters is so effective, the pirates will go for easier pickings: Joe & JillCruiser (armed to the teeth with their frypans and boathooks going up against kalashnikovs and rpg's). The insurance companies are making a motzer out of this problem, and the shipping companies want to get their profitable cargoes and valuable ships to destination. Hence the hired goons. Cruisers are on their own. Avoid the area, or take a huge gamble.
