Ok, we've made comparisons based on cost and interior space.

Is it time yet to make our comparisons based on similar windward performance?

Didn't you watch America's Cup? Of course that's the extreme, but some monos don't go to windward. Some will never learn no matter what your choice. You are making a compromise......i2f

When I started this topic I had no idea what would happen.
Why do users of this forum keep comparing apples and oranges?

As a monohull sailor (owner) I had the opportunity to try a multi and was pleasantly surprised by the comfort and volume. Less so by the motion in the ocean when sailing.

No matter what users are trying to compare it is irrelevant. Mono's and multi's have their pro's and con's and I believe everybody should make their own choice. If I have the opportunity to charter a multi again (quite expensive for two) I definitely will grab that opportunity.

Well it depends (doesn't everything?)

My experience is mainly with Catalacs, so I'll respond with what I know. A Catalac 8M or a Catalac 9M can be bought for anywhere between $15,000 to $40,000 depending upon condition, engine powering options and time since last refit. Check the for-sale area on my website for details. By no means am I suggsting these are the only boats at this price point, just the ones I know.

These boats have the interior room of a 36' to 38' mono and can be bought reasonably. You do give up performance compared to newer boats .... this is a given. Yet you own a Lloyds rated boat that is capable of crossing oceans abet not real fast or real comfortable. These smaller, older cats, are better suited for coastal cruising, which is what 99% of all boats do anyway.

My point is that it is possible to buy an entry level cruising catamaran for what people would pay for a monohull. However, if your yardstick is a $3000 boat.... then I would agree with your conclusion.

Sheesh, you guys just won't quit.

I sail to 35 degrees apparent. How well does your mono point? More importantly, is the difference really noteworthy?

Personally, I don't know anyone who bashes to windward for days at a time anyway...do you? Then again, I'm an old guy

I'd be happy to do that anytime. Then we can compare based on reaching performance, OK?

Here we go again...

Did you know orange juice tastes more like oranges than apple juice and that apple juice wins hand down from orange juice when you are looking for the real apple taste ??

Also, when comparing loading capacity between pick-ups and sports cars, who do you think will win? Of course the next contest will be acceleration times between the same.

Man, I don't know how you can be so nice about this kind of bullsh-t. I often wonder what these people are like IRL and whether they'd be so defensive in the flesh! What are they trying to prove anyway. Is there a prize for having the cruiserforum approved number of hulls?

Why don't you guys let the mono hulls think they are best, there is too much demand for cats already keeping prices up, even in these hard times.

Hi DragonLady,

I note you are struggling to find a cat a the right price here in Aus and may have to go overseas to find one. You will be well researched when you do from noting your forum contributions.

Your point is well taken. Quote - "Why don't you guys let the mono hulls think they are best, there is too much demand for cats already keeping prices up, even in these hard times. "

Good luck in the search for a catamaran.

I'm a cat owner, but nothing compares to sailing a mono in a beam reach in a good breeze, leaning out on the rail. Except maybe a Hobie Cat with a hull out of the water. In my opinion, there are three factors you need in order to get a great sailing cat. Weight (light), length (long), bridgedeck clearance (high, but with minimal windage which is clearly the opposite). I am in the process of buying a 1991 Lagoon 55 which I believe has these qualities. Most modern cruising cats do not and I think the sailing experience is nicely summed up in the initial post.

Thanks Down under,
I note you are looking at building your own 45 footer sounds like a plan.
I wish I had the time to build a boat there are some great designs and we also have some briliant tradies to build boats here in OZ.
We are just suffering from the conservative attitudes in our country, where did all the great idea and inovation go?
IMHO in 100 years time cats will be everywhere and monos will be the minority especially in the cruising market. The escalating cost of lead alone will make monos more expensive than cats, well maybe not but it does make you think.
