Ladies Sailing Need Ideas

Funny zeehag - I was actually thinking unconscious or injured crew member or maybe a large dog. I would use a halyard if I had to and winch them on board. Note my current dogs don't like water and won't come to me in the water so they don't get to go sailing.

Would love to have you expound the topic of sea conditions and weather observations. I am only familiar with local west coast of florida which can change quickly.

Getting a large unconscious person back on board is something I have often thought about. There was a very nasty sailing accident here in Australia a couple of years ago where the skipper died. And it took 7 burly blokey crew to get his body out of the water.

That accident scared me into doing my course and learning more about safety.

And have thought about having to use the halyard and perhaps breaking a few ribs if it was absolutely necessary.

As to large dogs.

I have a platform at the back with a fold down ladder which goes a long way into the water. The ladder is manily for me so I can get back on board after a awim.

Train the dog to swim to the platform, my old dogs could clamber onto the platform and then jump on board.

Still working on the new trainee seapuppy.

Re washing.
I get wet with seawater, use shampoo to wash hair and body. Rinse off with seawater and then a final rinse with a little bit of fresh water.

Dry hair in wind.

Pretty nails? Ha. Petrol, thinners, acetone etc play havoc with my acrylic nails. Did some maintenance yesterday and they are completely buggered.

A really good Book is "First Lady" by Kay Cottee. The first woman to sail solo and unassisted around the world. She wrote the book some years ago so it may be a little difficult to find.
She is an Aussie. She goes through in detail how she handled being a solo woman at sea. And came back the fittest she had ever been and her skin and hair looked wonderful.

I taught a similar course at the local yacht club 20 years ago. We covered:

• Operation of radios and position finding equipment
• Engine systems
• Electrical systems (AC & DC)
• Damage control
• Firefighting
• Navigation
• Helm & Controls

It was geared towards powerboats and after the classroom, we went to each of the individual students’ boat for hands on. The mornings were inside and the afternoons were outside. The Commodore of the club was a woman, and all the underway time was on her boat. The emphasis was operation in the event of incapacitation of the husband, as most of the guys had waaaaay to big of an ego to ever let them actually be in charge!
