Re: Journey or the Destination
I love to sail. Can't wait to shut down the engine and hear the wind and water. But I also love the adventure of the next port whether I've been there before or not. Sailing toward someplace is quite different than day sailing.

Re: Journey or the Destination
For me the 'Destination' is just the beginning of a new 'Journey'
If the boat is not moving...my mind is.
If the boat is moving, I am at peace.

Re: Journey or the Destination
In our case, it is the journey.
If we were destination-driven, we would fly, not sail.

This made me laugh out loud, Sailboy. If I took all the money we have spent on boats over the past 35 years and divided that by the actual miles traveled in those years I would probably puke when I realized what the cost per mile was.
You say that you spend $10K per year on your boat? How many miles did you actually cover in your boat this year? Could you have gotten to the other side of the bay or pond or whatever any cheaper? I'm sure that your boat expenses per year would pay for a whole lot of travel. And you have those expenses even when you're not traveling. All these years you're maintaining and paying to keep a boat that you are going to cruise on someday is just payment in advance on future travel. It all counts.
I agree with the previous poster who said that if you don't love the sailing there are much cheaper and faster ways to get where you're going.
I love visiting new places and meeting new people but I am also perfectly happy to just take the boat out, find a good point of sail, sit back and go absolutely nowhere at all. The fact that I arrive somewhere interesting at the end of the day is just icing on the cake.

If we are only looking at the cost per mile, then sailing isn't a bargain - agreed. However, when you figure in lodging for months on end and living off of your own provisions, then it's another story entirely.
Let's say you fly-in someplace cheap and spend just $100 a day on the motel food/drink - Well, that's still $3,000 a month or $36k a year just in living expenses (not including travel).
At anchor it can be much cheaper while still having a decent standard of living.
So yes, sailing on a per-mile traveled basis is costly, but also a real money-saver the longer you stay out.

I bet it happens on the shorter trips also?

Re: Journey or the Destination
Reached our destination 5 years ago, the idea was to stay for 3 - 4 month. Now we call it our home, but it really gets time to buy a boat again and stay a way from our "home" for at least 12 moths.

Re: Journey or the Destination
The destination and just hanging around in beautiful places and meeting nice people is what we like most. The boat gets us there and provides a perfect waterfront condo along with a place to keep the beer cold.... or room temp if we're in England.
But now that we're in Sardinia where the wind comes up daily, we do like to move around more frequently and under sail.
Good topic.

The best part of the journey is all the great destinations along the way.

Re: Journey or the Destination
I think the destination is still part of the journey (unless the destination is home). Upon arrival the senses are what continues to journey, new experiences/sensations/discoveries.

Re: Journey or the Destination
For me its definitely the journey. Just being out on the open ocean wind in the rigging sails full and no land in sight. But I maybe a bit weird since when the weather is foul I dream of being out in the middle of it if I'm stuck on land. I like the bigger seas and pelting spray in the face with stiff winds, sleeping wet and everything that goes with it. I also enjoy cloudless sky's and a steady fair wind.
I guess all my hobbies have been the same Alpine climbing, four wheel driving, diving etc. it's always about the journey. The destination is just the celebration for the journey.

Re: Journey or the Destination
"Power boaters are always in a hurry to get to an interesting place. Sail boaters are already there."
Not an original quote but I don't remember the source. I think it pretty much sums up the sailing mindset. Heck, lots of times we have just hung out on the boat, enjoyed a few beers and some conversation, and never left the dock.

Re: Journey or the Destination
Yep. Running out of can ruin your journey.
I know of a case where a white christian sailor attacked innocent somali fishermen and forced them to turn in all their cigarettes. I am not sure what he bartered in. He was driven right into a rehab upon his arrival in Suez.
