They used to say that about California.

With 12 cm of snow here in / around Victoria yesterday, and more falling right now, Mexico would be welcome.

Besides, it's a downwind sail, right?

I keep telling my 95 year old father-in-law that it's time to stop playing Santa and White Xmas already!!!

Oh that is a good bit. I hope the diesel heater is working.
Yes, let's just make it a west coast earthquake, California to BC all crack off, downwind sail and attach to mainland Mexico. Sounds like a good plan to me!

Ha, that's cute. Oh and please let him know too that he can finally stop doing the rain dance - we're all good now. We all want to go enjoy the warmest time of the year to sail in Northern California - Winter!

Re: Is your boat part of your Doomsday Plan?

Of course I've thought of using my boat to escape zombies, or whatever might be wreaking havoc on my city....so long as they come during the sailing season!

Seriously though, when the ice storm of 98 hit, I was well prepared because I kept all my boat stuff at home. I had installed a woodstove at my house, so I was already ahead of the game, but I had radios, batteries, candles, flashlights, matches, and even an origo stove! So we were pretty well setup and (don't tell anyone) enjoyed the time off work. We took spare batteries, FM radios, and candles to neighbours. We were surprised that some people did not even have a single match in their house, or a battery operated FM radio. I'll just say that I was really happy to have all my gear at home. I put my kerosene anchor light up in the driveway to show that we were home, and people came over every evening to talk and warm up by our fire. It was really nice. Without TV or other distractions, people wanted to talk to other people. And even though the phones were working, we were the only ones who had an old "not cordless" phone...so we could make calls. I learned a lot from the ice storm, and stay prepared to this day. When I had a pipe burst at my house recently, I was glad I had all my "boat water" in jugs, ready to go, since the water had to be turned off till a plumber could get here.

My grandparents lived through WW2, and had their own preparedness ready too, based on their experience of having to flee europe to save their lives.

When the northeast experienced a severe power outage some years ago I went to my boat. Grilled up a steak with the stereo blasting. At dark I turned on every outside light I had.

Please leave politics and political statements out of it, they will be deleted as they even if meant as jokes are inflammatory and this is a cruising forum.
I am sure there are no shortages of political forums you can post on

Not sure why people push their political views anymore. It's like Lagoon owners convincing FP owners their boat is better, or 44c trying to convince monohull sailors that multis aren't poorly built death traps that will eventually kill them and vice versa

Re: Is your boat part of your Doomsday Plan?

When we lived in CC Philadelphia we kept a Portebote at home, a couple of blocks from the river, which connected to our boat, which remained ruled, watered and stocked, in the water, year round.

Now we are retired and live aboard. Much better.

From my viewpoint our boat is PART of ur bug out plan. It is a way to get to our summer cabin in Newfoundland. A criteria for the boat was the capability of it to make a poor weather passage in February. Yes, we have heat, and back ups.

You may just want to sit in the harbor and watch the lakes until the riots calm down, or you may want to go someplace else. Having options is not a bad thing.

As to rescuing others, we have fantasies of rescuing our kids, probably unlikely they will decide to big out. Other than that, we are each on our own. Yes it was neat during 9/11, but in a general catastrophe self preservation would be difficult enough.

What a sad and disturbing comment, one I would assume would be inappropriate here.

I took it as purely in jest perhaps wishing for warmer weather?

In this political climate there are is a fine line between "joke" and otherwise. I apologize if I commented inappropriately.

It is tough to tell if someone is kidding or not, so I go with giving them the benefit of the doubt, and plus when it is tremendously ridiculous, I figure it's likely a joke

I would be much more concerned about being shot by one of my fellow Americans. About 80 a day. It's a numbers thing.
