Not a good idea. It's like deciding to start jogging and doing a marathon your first time you step out the door. Actually.... it's worse than that. Trailer it up!

Re: Is 'this' Possible, or Is it Suicide ?

Actually anything is possible. However other things come to mind. Well thought out....no, chance of success.......30% to 70% against, Entertaining..... definately for some. If you go ahead with this give us the details as I am sure it will make a good sporting event to do some betting on. Odds anyone. Have you ever seen a 30 foot wave off the Oregon coast from a 27 ft. boat? It is scary as hell in a boat twice that size with a lot of power.

Probably a troll, there have been a few of these threads here and on other boards the last week or so.

But if not...OP...buy the boat and go for it. Just prepare properly, plan adequately, and head out on an adventure! Post up your progress and take pictures too.

Re: Is 'this' Possible, or Is it Suicide ?

This is possible, you just need to tweak your plan a little. If your mindset is that you need to just GO, and you HAVE to get to Vancouver Island, then skip the coastal leg and buy a boat in the south Puget Sound, where there's ample protection, lots of state parks with good moorings, lots of good anchorages, lots of facilities and stops along the way, and lots of easy short legs you can sail.

You can take baby steps all the way to Nanaimo BC without a significant crossing. Just from Olympia (the southern tip of the Puget Sound) to Nanaimo, there is easily a full season of exploring to be done. The Puget Sound and San Juan Islands and Gulf Islands are beautiful, great cruising ground and all quite accessible.

If you're feeling confident at that point and your boat is holding up, you can then tackle Johnstone Strait, and squeeze through to the Broughtons and beyond.

I agree.

I'd actually liken it to him going to a mountain climbing forum and posting "I've never been mountain climbing before and neither has my buddy, but we're both going to buy the gear we need, do some local climbing and then after a week or two go climb Mt. Everest. Is this a good idea or suicide?"

I'm sure it can be done. The real question is whether or not it is wise to do so. And I think nearly everyone here can agree that its not.

Seems the OP has got a few pages and some concerned. As if any newbies will continue north into that pacific mess. Sure it is possible. As for suicide just jump off the san francisco bridge as the people who migrate there do. You will survive the sail. And if worse comes to worse you can call the coast guard and abandon your investment{boat} and call it a day. cheers

Well, 41 with yours, and 42 with this one.

On the other hand, the vehemence of many responses and the vitriol of some may have scared him away.
