Re: Is this company real?

Don't know about them.

FWIW, I got a decent price when we bought a new outboard from the Porta-bote people.

Re: Is this company real?

I wouldn't risk it myself. I tried digging into their domain registration and it's all very generic and listed with an Indonesian company.

Their price is 100-200 euros higher than in Germany, if you are in the US, price check with Defender.

Anybody who refuses to accept payment from recognized channels like paypal or credit cards must be assumed to be crooked. You might as well send them cash and trust that they are honest. There are too many legitimate businesses out the to justify taking a foolish risk.

Re: Is this company real?

You have tried Ebay, right? Also many big marinas have occasional boat stuff swaps, where there are usually several outboards for sale. We had good luck with Craigslist. So why are you shopping in Indonesia?

Re: Is this company real?

6 years ago, I paid twice the price they advertise for a Tohatsu 6.5hp outboard from the cheapest legitimate online company at the time.

Sounds too good to be true.

Normally, if there is a physical storefront address and phone number, it could be considered legit. Google the address and see if the storefront address matches the pictures. Or does it look like a port where stuff falls out of containers all the time...

Don't go there. Don't even think about going there....

Looking at the Tohatsu 3.5hp outboards at the link, that's actually the price I expected would be the norm in America.

The price in Rip-Off Britain is usually the same number in £, as prices in America are in $.

I would say anybody more expensive in America, would be the ones that are 'unreal'.

Prices of inflatables (and liferafts) in America are 'unreal' too.

The four person Offshore Seago liferaft (one of the best, always either top or 2nd in tests) here, full retail is £699 (a touch over $1,000 equivalent). A good safety check when due, can be had for £100 (about $150 equivalent).

I don't know what has gone wrong in America, but something is seriously amiss.

I was going to buy new outboard, inflatable, and a liferaft when I was in America, but I am going to buy them when I am back here now.

The only way to win that game, is not to play.

PS Bear in mind prices here are cheaper, despite import duty and 20% VAT on top (plus business overheads are generally higher too).

PS Anybody cruising near to check them out?

+1

Exactly what I saw George, compared to prices in Britain.

PS A bit of an extra insight into what is going on.

In Britain, the top spark plugs for my motorbike range between £14 and £20 each.

In Thailand, also shipped in, and paying a higher import duty, and a higher sales tax, those same spark plugs are £0.50p each . . . . . .

A Honda 125cc in Britain with lower duty and lower sales taxes, is a few pence under £3,000. In Thailand, it's about £600.

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, fatten it up and make foie gras but don't send them a dime
