Is it time?

I'm growing impatient, had my HR 33 since Sept, and spent the winter rebuilding the 4-108, it's done I've got a few minor issues to,sort out, like installing a new tack, and a oil pressure sending unit.

Also fuel filters before I roll.

Never sailed on the ocean before, after brief thought, my plan is, leave early, like 05:00/06:00 put my life vest on, cross the bar, crank the music, and point her NW, turn up the music and head north.

Bingo points are Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay, should trouble arise.
I'm told the distance over water is roughly 100 miles from ML into the SF bay. A long day, Manageable.

Folks I'd like to be out within the next 60 days. I've stayed put in ML, on the advice of you here on the forums.

I like solid advice on proper, reasonable time to go north. Tentative plan is stay in the bay/ delta, learning the boat, then early su,,er move up the coast.

Can you all share your wisdom on the first phase.

Thank,you in advance.

Re: Is it time?

Why have you been staying put with prevalence of good S and SW winds over the past month. You'd have a screaming sail to the Bay with these frontal passages. Winds have been strong but not to much so and you'd be on a reach or run so easily handled.

Now going South is another story as I need to do. Winds alternating between NW and S in 4-6 day intervals makes the trip down the coast to SoCal iffy from the Bay.

"Never sailed on the ocean before"
Take someone with you who has. I'd take off Friday morning and see if I could make it to Pillar Point.
Wait till Sunday for an early start to finish the rest of the trip.
(just judging from current weather forecast).

Re: Is it time?

Thank you for the response, my main reason is our friends here, have suggested that as a FNG, blue water guy, I hold tight until optimum sail season.

Based on that info, consensuous, I took my time rebuilding my 4-108m and just put the motor back in the boat, and re plumbed it, and did the bottom last weekend in moss landing. I did get an hour and a half motor systems check done.

A few more tweek' son the boat, and I'm GTG. A days worth of work. I just started to watch noaa weather in the area, yesterday and the day before would have been a wild ride.

I'm going to,follow Dons advice and sail to Half Moon Bay, overnight, then into the bay when a window opens.

Think I'm going to Peteluma marina, per a conversation with them yesterday. A bit further off the bay bit much closer then the Delta, aroumd Lodi.

I'll spend the summer on the bay, learning the boat, her good and bad points. I intend to head for SW Alaska spring of 2018, for the summer.

As a lake sailer, the answer has always been to,throw more rail bait on, and tighten the sails. I'm a lot of thinks, but I'm not stupid, and understand the finesse and good judgement for even this short journey.

I'll wait, I'm retired and have the time to be cautious.

Thank you.

Re: Is it time?

Snort, I'm back up in Oregon now, working on my San Juan 21 for this race season. It's a 9 hour drive to get to moss landing, in talking with my friends in Sonoma, it's raining like crazy.

I-5 near Maxwell is flooding, mini land slides all up and down I-5 from the border to Redding. not a good time to be on the freeway.

And my social circle of ocean sailors is lite. I don't think I even know any ocean sailors.

This may seem brash, but I want to savior that first sail on the ocean. I don't want to share it with others. I need the adrenaline Rush. I need to feel the raw power of Mother Nature.

It's wierd. I've always been an a adrenaline junky.

Thank you.

Re: Is it time?

The HR 33 Mistral has a draft of nearly 5 feet. Right now, the Petaluma River has plenty of water, but normally in summer, you'd have to wait for high tide just to get out of your slip there. It's also about a 2-hour motor slog to get to San Pablo Bay.

Re: Is it time?

recommend fng find salty old curmudgeon with whom to get at least to san diego with.. south of that is not so bad. but that first half will kill or cure ye.
south of conception is a lot easier than north of it. and south of sd is even better.
fng will learn a lot between pnw and san diego.
best of luck.

Re: Is it time?

Hi Snort, my draft is less then 4 feet. I'm aware of the two hour in/out. The reason I've given Petaluma serious consideration is I've got close friends and relatives within 15 minutes.

I'm open to other marina's. I'm wanting to keep my mooring to below 250.00 a month. And I'm not a big city guy. In fact I hate going into cities. Thought Petaluma, or such might be a great compromise.

Was also considering Lowrys, San Rafael, Way way to much legalese for me. I live a very simple life, a promise and a handshake is my style.

Snort, where would you go.

And thank, you for the heads up.

Re: Is it time?

Dirk, if you want to spend time on the water in the summer, in SF Bay, look at Berkeley, Emeryville, and in the Oakland Estuary. All of those provide timely access to the Bay. If you're way the heck up the Petaluma R., you'll not get what you say you want.

Treat yourself to some paper charts for your projected journey, and memorize where the "hard bits" are.

Ann

Re: Is it time?

Hi Dirk,
I'm still working on mine, but plan on Vallejo Marina because it's relatively cheap, relatively unoccupied, and right close to sailing waters.
Benicia is close enough, if I want to walk around a town.

Re: Is it time?

Zee, you are priceless, a true gem of the sea. Thank you for your sage wisdom.

Ann, thank you aswell. Your advice aswell as Zee's is always appreciated. When either of you are talking, I'm listening to every last word.

I'm catching flack at home for spending nearly 400.00 a month in moss landing. I need to be in the 250.00 ish range. I could go to Brookings Or fit 1400.00 a year.

Bottom line , mans got to know his limitations. I am not ready to trek up the California, Oregon coast alone. I will be by end of summer.

ID love to be right on the bay. Im told I could maybe get into Lowrys, via family friend. I started to do the paper work and thought I was back in court. Scared me.

Are all the marina's like that?

Anyway I'm not locked into Petaluma, is just reasonably priced and a decent location to visit friends and family.

I'm open to suggestions.

Again thank you all. For your input.

Dirk.

Re: Is it time?

Snort, any idea of costs? I have friends who are with coco county Sheriffs Office, they advise to stay clear of Vallejo, way to many problem children. Not specifically the marina but the town.

I'm not worried about my saftey, I worry about all my cool sailboat kit walking when not on the boat.

Berth Rental Fees & Payment - City of Vallejo
That's for the city of Vallejo marina.

A really nice, quiet, and safe marina is this one:
Amenities & Rates — The Glen Cove Marina

If you can find an open slip there, you'd like it!
