Is it customary to pay for air fare of a volunteer crew that will be sailing

my new to me boat to my home? Will be flying in three friends about 1000 miles from their town to the boat's location. Voyage of approximately 5 days off shore for most of the trip?

Thanks

You should pay for their food and booze too.

Thanks, I am new to bringing a boat in like this. All the other boats I have ever bought were within a day's sail.

Discuss it with your friends..... They know you and may want to just help you while having an adventure.

Add a few interesting stops and the air fare becomes less of an issue and more of a holiday with friends

Good luck and enjoy

they are getting a free holiday!
the least they can do is pay their own airtickets if they are friends.

if however it is a delivery then paying airtickets is a good incentive so you have reliable crew arriving on time.

OK! Some posts have been deleted for............... anyway they have. Let's keep it at least helpful. Funny is OK as well, but not with the personal attacks, that is just woeful, and woeful I am the best at.

There are no hard and fast rules.

But if it's a delivery with mostly hard sailing and no cruising, and if the crew is well qualified, then the owner usually pays some or all of the crew's expenses, including sometimes airfare.

If it's a cruise with time for fun, then the crew usually, on the contrary, pay their own expenses and pay their share of all of the common expenses (food, fuel, berthing). Sometimes they even pay something on top of that -- towards repairs etc., or sometimes the boat owner is even making money (but then it's really a charter).

But then again -- no hard and fast rules.

Quick test - are they doing you a favour by coming for the trip or are you doing them a favour? And there is your answer.

The way I've always done it is that the crew pays their airfare/ground-expenses, shares the cost of provisioning, and I cover all boat expenses.

Re: Is it customary to pay for air fare of a volunteer crew that will be sailing

In my experience, both as crew on an offshore passage for a good friend and for good friends crewing on my boat, the skipper paid for all on-board expenses and the crew paid their own on-shore and transportation expenses. I bought drinks and dinner for all on the night before departure. All of us viewed the experience as an adventure/vacation for all aboard, not a "delivery".

When I ask people to sail for me, I pay.

When I ask people to take me along, I pay.

Very simple system that works.

Could be a little bit of both (like in win-win) and there is the reason for this topic.

Exactly. Last delivery I did, the owner asked me and another experienced sailor to help him do the trip. He paid our airfares.

We had two friends of his on board who asked to come along. They paid their own fares.
