You might want to talk to a bike shop and have them replace the cables with stainless steel ones.

Now there's a good idea. I didn't know they came in stainless. So far the brake cables are the only part of the bike giving me rust trouble.

We have a couple Mezzo folders with 4-speed internal hub gearing. That's plenty for us most of the time in most harbors.
