Is a TIP Available Once inside Mexico?

Hi folks,

I recently bought a boat and I'm still waiting for the USCG Documentation. I'm told that it might take up to 3 months to receive. I am planning on taking my boat to Mexico at the end of October. Normally I would apply for a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) online and have it when I entered Mexico, but that option may not work depending on when I finally receive my COG.

Has anybody entered Mexico without a TIP and applied for it once in Mexico? I plan to clear in in Ensenada, and might be able to kill two birds with one stone. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Bill

You can and should request expedited service from the documentation center. You can get your TIP in Mexico (there is a 7 day grace period) but not without your documentation. You will have trouble clearing in to Mexico without it as well.

How about changing ownership in Mexico? Is that a paper shuffle or more involved?
