Why? If your woman isn't comfortable down below in a newer 40 footish Hunter you better have a land based backup plan.

When we went to look at our 410 I told my wife that I was expecting her to love it and to not say anything while the broker was there as love comes with a premium.


PS - I wouldn't have taken her to see if if I also didn't want the comfort. No hair dragging required except when asked for!

When we started thinking of retirement venues my wife suggested we look at boats and travel. We looked at the 58 Camper & Nicholson Ketch and had to have it. I'm a sucker for classic overhangs and mass. Lynn loved the interior. We both earned our Masters. Its been a lot of fun together. AND - I put as many women on the boat as possible.

Guess you are a person with problems with cats and hunters.

With such vessels you are getting away from the man cave vessel type and certainly more 2nd half friendly even if at a cost, a good thing but not necessarily for some. There is a review of a Hunter 50 in current Australian Cruising Helmsman magazine, a comfortable roomy vessel to be based in Tasmania.

As previous poster indicated Nicholson 58 indicated some couples wish to spend their retirement vovaging in some comfort not camping, with ability to cater for friends or family for periods. A man cave is not suitable for this.

Not knocking man cave style vessels as they certainly have a place but they are not suitable for all.

Thanks! It does seem to turn heads. It takes a while to get the mass moving but cruises along nicely around 9-10.

Hi, everyone,

It seems to me that in a couples situation, the one who knows more about what makes boats sail well and be safe at sea is the one who should have more weight on his or her input to the boat choice. Ultimately, I think most women who are interested to go sailing or become long term cruisers would agree.

One issue not yet addressed here is distribution of the available volume amongst couples. That has to do with the number of tools, fix-it materials and whatnot aboard, 'cause what's left over from that is for storage of foodstuffs, then clothing. The space is finite.....and so are most cruisers' budgets, so nattering on about 50+ foot boats is outside most folks' price range. Personally, I have seen newbies on over 50 ft. boats, and they do the most amazingly unseamanlike things! It's a caution.

And yes, making the "right" choice of partner is way important. It's different for those who get to choose a second partner. If you are a person with a partner whom you love, and want to successfully interest them in sailing, you will be most successful if you set it up for them to enjoy the experiences. This means facing up to the needs of the partner. What I have written here uses non gender-specific wording for a reason: I really think the gender is irrelevant to the principle.

Spot on there...and our experience suggests "some" could be accurately replaced with "a lot of"...!!

Well, couldn't this also be a matter of definition? Or perhaps we might adopt Zeehag's 'me cave' expression. Either way, we know lots of couples who cruise comfortably...and the fellows still think of their vessels as their man caves...and perhaps the admirals also think of the vessels as me caves!?!

This is a great Idea ! This thread that is, I would not even think of makeing an offer on a boat that Connie did not Like! Im lucky that our tastes are pretty much the same IE: we don't like dark boats ! we like all the light we can get ! ports and hatchs can always be curtined off if its to glareing or hot ! We like comfort and lots of wham whams, and zoom zooms!( thats gennys and ac and stuff like that to you young folks LOL) We like a well ventilated galley And a GOOD bed queen sized of course ! also long range under power. As far as electronics are concerned, radios and radar are all we need as she has her lap top with her nav stuff on it, and I have my hand held GPS's and of course my charts ! LOL anyway Connie has a BIG say in what we live on and sail !!
