What's the sound a pirate makes as he/she takes their last breath? That's the "talk" we need to be hearing.

Re: International 'Talk Like a Pirate' Day

Wait a minute fellas, I am in no way attempting to big up the Somali “pirates”.
There ARE differences between these psychopathic murderers and the stuff of children’s books.

I personally abhor violence in any form. Heck, Long John Silver, Cap’n Hook and the like would be turning in their graves (if they were real and not just pretend characters) to think their memories would terrify modern educated sailors.

When I go to a costume party dressed as a “Gangster” I’d go dressed as Al Capone right? Although, in contemporary parlance a “Gangster” is misogynistic, wears his pants around his knees, a big fat gold chain around his neck, and talks in an incomprehensible shorthand about busting a cap in your a##. Are you with me?

In my spats, suit, white tie and fedora, I am in no way condoning the murderous activities of one of America’s most popular folk heroes nor am I attempting to glorify Murder Music by emulating a Rapper. D’ya catch my drift?

From where I stand September 19 is all a bit of harmless fun, I certainly didn’t mean any offence.

Fair winds, Clear Skies

Re: International 'Talk Like a Pirate' Day

Just recently returned from the Portland Pirate Festival myself. As usual, it was awesome. Fun was had by all, especially the kiddies, and NO somali terrorists were seen. Many people made some money, and funds were raised for things like tall ships. I don't see the problem...

Re: International 'Talk Like a Pirate' Day

Harmless bit of fun in my opinion. Why do people get so hung up on PC issues these days, I cannot imagine anybody on this forum equating the antics of a bunch of people enjoying themselves saying "Arrrrr me hearties" to Somali terrorists.

Really? I mean, it sounds nice, and creates a comfortable moral perch, but I suggest you may not have thought this through.

Ever laugh at a Bugs Bunny cartoon? Enjoyable? Be honest, now.

What about the violence of a American football, or hockey, or rugby game? Good violence, or bad?

What about the violence the police (or just passersby) exert stopping an attacker assaulting a woman victim? Good violence, or bad?

What about the violence the militaries of civilized nations uses against terrorist bad guys? Or the violence American Navy Seal sharp-shooters used by putting bullets in the heads of those Somali pirates threatening the lives of their hostages? Justified and well-placed violence, or not?

Violence itself is not evil. It can be a mechanism for expressing evil, be a legitimate element in competition, or be a mechanism for stopping evil and bringing about good.

Don't mean to offend; just trying to point out the possible inconsistencies in thinking.

Now let's reexamine "War is never the answer"… Anyone?

Not sure if it is okay to talk like pirate, but for sure don't fly a pirate flag.
