Insurance question

Greetings,

Went and looked at a few sailboats today that I liked. All need a little work, but until I can hit Powerball, those are my options.

My question for the class, when insuring a boat for lets say marina requirements, do the insurance companies ask about sailing experience, or boating experience in general. I was a teenager the last time I sailed, and that was with my parents. However I owned my 23' center console fishing boat for the past 10 years, and been out on friends boats for the past 20! Does any of this help? Do you think I would save any money with ASA certifications?

Thanks, Ken

Re: Insurance question

BoatUS gave me a 5% discount for passing their 50 question online boating safety test. This safety test also qualified me to get the WA state boat operator card when it became law here without any additional testing. ASA would be way beyond the online test.

All insurance companies are different. One asked for a sailing resume and said they were impressed with my experience, another asked what I had owned and said I was making a big jump from a Hobie to a 40 footer.

Re: Insurance question

I'm going to look into the Coast Guard Power Squadron Safety Course also.

Re: Insurance question

Good question. I hope you get some discussion on this. Probably been asked before, but my search skills are poor on a good day.
