Input? What is the best way to keep the ends of sheets, halyards and control lines looking good and in good shape?
I've seen it all - small amounts of tape, melted ends, sailmakers whippings etc. All the lines on my boat are in good shape but all the ends aren't consistent. What looks good and keeps the lines in good shape?

Yes, we whip ours, too. In addition, sometimes melt what might protrude beyond the end of the whipping. Don't have to do that if it was cut with a hot knife, thought.

I melt the end of all the lines, then Some get whipping, while others get a short length of adhesive lined heat shrink tube.

Whipping then melt. Works well if done tight.
Scott, what's a "double whip"?

Ours are polyester so I just chop them with a hot knife. This does not work with spectra nor nylon.
I use longer tails and no knots at the ends.
Cheers,
b.

I like to leave the whipped ends unmelted and let them fray.
The soft, broom-like end is a little nicer under (bare) foot or when a flogging line hits you in the face.

+1
I have done this for years. I use just plain non-adhesive white (or any color you want) heat shrink over the whipping. It protects the whipping and lasts a long time and I like the look.

Whipping. I go aboard other boats and check out the consistency and color coordination of whipping. If it is not perfectly done in a ship-shape manner I think horrible thoughts about the owner and just imagine that if his or her whipping is poor then he or she probably never changes the oil either (or polishes the bell).

I do both methods, depending on mood and chance of wear and tear due to location on deck or mast.

Re: Input? What is the best way to keep the ends of sheets, halyards and control lin
I'd like to express a word of caution about melting the ends of ropes. Many years ago in my youth, I had a friend do massive damage to the palm of his had (think a DEEP cut) when the melted end of a rope pulled through his grip; the other end of the rope was attached to a startled horse.
The hard, melted end of the rope acted as a knife, except he ended up with a cut that wasn't very clean. Ever since that event, if I've needed to melt the end of a rope, I made sure to VERY carefully shape it and, if needed, trim it.
