Re: information about Sao Tomé et Principe

I've cruised that coast when I was in the US military. Sao Tome and Principe are beautiful and the people were very friendly and inviting. We even met some US expats who ran a small bar/restaurant on the island. Super cool couple.

Granted I was on a rather large military vessel, but we didn't have any encounters with piracy. We observed all the typical anti-piracy measures though (i.e. darken ship at night, extra lookouts, no AIS transmissions, 100+ miles from the African mainland).

We made stops in Accra Ghana, Cotonou Benin and Bata Equatorial Guinea as well.

S....t , until now piracy was in most cases near from the coast of Nigeria,Ghana, Togo, Cameroun . Only tree piracy facts in higths sea . I planned to move away the max from the coast even it is longer , but if piracy is confirmed between Gabon and Sao Tome its over for me ...

I hope it is only a breakdown of the AIS ...

What Mike described/seen, were quite serious measures from civilian vessels.

Some updates on the story, apparently they were held 9 days by the pirates.
