I'm Done Kissing Frogs.

So far a have flown the width and breadth of Australia looking at boats on various occasions.

Before doing so I have grilled people regarding there boats (brokers and owners) and have been assured they meet my carefully explained condition criteria (I can make my own assessment otherwise).

Every single time I turn up to a boat that couldn't possibly be the boat they described to me!

Today, after a 6 hour round trip, where a piece of the boats frame actually snapped off when trodden on from the rot (and that was just a small sample of the systemic problem of rot throughout this "impeccable" boat, I have had enough.

What the #%#% do brokers think, you won't be pissed off, that you might just buy the piece of £#%€ they are selling. GET A CLUE!

18 months of this is more than any person should have to handle.

I think I will take up caravanning

Re: I'm done kissing frogs.

Yikes! Is it possible a buyer's broker could wade through this BS for you? I know I'd rather not spend bucks on something like that, but if it eliminates the expense of travelling to see a POS, it may be a worthwhile strategy.

Sorry you're having such a rotton time with your search. I predict that you'll find the perfect boat very close to were you started your search.

Think of boat brokers as auto salesman who are to lazy to stand to do their work..

Maybe you need to raise your price range or lower your expectations?

I have tried a buyer agent type relationship. We really don't have them in OZ and I now know why.

I have quadrupled my budget and compromised my expectations. But yes I may be the reason I can't find the boat but my issue is people who tell me they have "the boat" when in reality my 7 year old knows it is nothing like what was described.

If it was simply I can't find one that's fine I need to change my list.

After a while kissing frogs just gives you slimy lips.

By the way. The folks here have saved me countless hours on top of that I have spent so a big thank you there!

All I can say is keep your chin on your chest, your guard up and keep jabbing. There's a lot of boats out there and some of them are being sold by good people.

Re: I'm done kissing frogs.

What are you looking for?
Maybe someone knows a good boat that can end your frustration?
They say a picture tells a thousand lies but found there are tell tail signs in photos that give away a dud boat and will save you a lot of wasted time.

Re: I'm done kissing frogs.

Hang in there James... as I told you earlier, it took us three years to find I-2, and then it just happened. Met the right people, got word of mouth, saw boat, eventually talked the owners into selling her to us before we went and (gasp) bought a catamaran.

But it is frustrating to be lied to. One wonders if it is ignorance or arrogance on the part of brokers who falsely describe their wares... and then are taken aback when we, the prospective big-bucks customers are pissed off when things are vastly different than described.

Keep trying, mate... you might consider sauteed frog legs when the kiss turns bad!

Cheers,

Jim

Thanks dragon lady

In no special order

I am looking for a 36 - 40ft timber or grp monohull.

Prefer to avoid teak deck

Must have 2 quarter berths and useable V berth for 2 adults and two children

A "classic style" rather than modern production

Aft cockpit

Sloop or cutter rig

Some double Enders ok but prefer a stern

Needing some work is ok (varnishing, clean up etc)

Mainly coastal cruising, some day sailing

Fin or full keel

Wheel or tiller

Anything from the Perry, Crealock kind of stable really attract me but am not just looking for there boats

Budget: prefer less than $120k Aus but for the right boat up to 180k

Thanks Jim , we have a similar sense of humor, I suggested to the broker that he should be marketing the boat to woodfire pizza companies as free firewood.

Apparently he thought I was being rude. Go figure.

Not an unreasonable range of expectations at all, in range or price!
Have you spoken to David Bray or any of his staff, most helpful and not full of B/S. Just my experience, no connection Cheers

Yes, I have and 100% agree with you regarding the guys. Have actually brought and sold through him before.

At the moment he hasn't come up with anything but to his credit hasn't wasted my time either.

Your price range sure seems reasonable. Maybe Bob Perry will chime in with some suggestions. I know he helped a guy at our marina find a Baba 40 in the Caribbean.

That sounds very doable there's a really nice Valiant 40 on boat point for $125K it has a canoe stern and they have a pretty big following in the states where they are made.
They certainly have a traditional look.
