I think 2 things jump out as potential issues, probably arising from ignorance

Volvo engine - are these not fairly problematic?

In mast furling - always concerned these will bind up on me? Real issue or not?

Well, I've got a Volvo in my Wauquiez and it hasn't been a problem (knocking on wood..). Parts are more expensive but there are tons of sailboats out there with Volvo's in them, so parts and supplies are readily available. If I were picking engines, it would be a Yanmar but I'm happy with what I have.

No experience with the in-mast furling. I've heard the concerns but again there are lots out there sailing. Had a good friend with one in his Cheoy Lee 41. He didn't like it because of what it does to the shape of the sail. Never heard about any problem with it binding up.

Amongst the mass production boats that I posted here I reckon the 2 cabin version of the Beneteau 38s5 would be the most suitable. Whether it is "the" boat, I have no idea.

Johnathon, hi have just been reading this blog and am sad to read the pains you have been having...having just met and helped Dragon Lady when they were here picking up their yacht I would like to try to aid you..if the yacht does not have to be in Australia I do have a yacht that 'may' suit your purposes..she has been very well looked after and is being sold by a family that has owned her for 20+ years ..if you would like more details get back to me and I can send you the details..if you find this a suspicous response ask dragon lady about me....hopefully helpful oxmetal

You mentioned you may take up Caravaning. Well, since I'm selling my house, and the bit of water I plan to cruise upon is over 1500 miles away, I have bought a small (19') Caravan. I plan on departing the day the sale on my house closes. I figure on spending time in each major area (Corpus Christy, Houston, Beaumont, etc.) Untill the right boat jumps up and hits me. I have seen a few and you are right, lots of frogs. But then even frogs are better than most of the boats out there, they can float, and their butts are water tight.
I have another thing to worry about, storm damage. A lot of the boats in this area have been under water, some for not a short time. Raised boats can be fixed, but generally the owners just want to get rid of them, and don't want the buyer to know.

Sounds like a great idea!

The storm damage thing is just starting to appear here with boats that were damaged in Cyclone Yasi.

I've got nothing to worry about really, I just got an e-mail that was ment for someone else. They don't have the receipiants real name but they think it's me. They are holding a box in customs for me that contains 8.5 million dollars. I just need to send them my bank numbers so they can transfer it. But there is a small fee I need to pay first.

If you want to consider steel, this looks a good bet.
I havn't seen it, but have emailed the owner.
Motor is a bit unusual, but pretty low hours.
I know of a couple with four young kids who cruised one of these from tassie to north qld and back, they loved the boat.

The universe spoke yesterday and kicked four potentials in my face including a crealock 37, a Farr 1220 and a Mason 43.

So am about to start the process again.

The crealock is one of my all time favorite but doesn't have 2 quarter berths for the kids, don't know, the Farr has the accom but not the build.

I don't know, I guess you are unlikely to die from a lack of accommodation!
