I need input on a "Flexofold" prop

Hello Fellow Sailors:

I am setting up a new 49 Beneteau with a 110 Yanmar. The boat came stock with a "Flexofold" 3 blade folding prop. I have no experience with a folding prop. I have a diver change my zinc monthly in the Chesapeake and can have him clean the prop while he is down there. Does anyone have any experience with this type of prop.

Thanks,

Big Moe

Don't want to hijack your thread but... do you really go through 12 zincs a year? No underwater system, folding or otherwise, should go through zincs that fast....

FWIW several threads on this forum discuss the Flex-o-Fold. Do a search in the Propellers & Running Gear topic.

Flexing yo' muscles

Moe,

We bought a 3 blade FOF for InsatiableII about 5.5years ago, and have found it to be a first class bit of kit. Good performance forward, ok in reverse, no worries with folding, etc, and after about 1500 hours useage there is no slop whatsoever in the blades or gears.

We have again found that the button anode on the hub seems to be water soluble... very short lifetime. Shaft zinc lasts the usual 6-12 months, button about 2-3. Had the same issues with a feathering prop on Insatiable I, and suspect that it has to do with turbulence in the hub area, but no data to really support that hypothesis.

HOpe that this helps...

Cheers,

Jim and Ann s/v Insatiable II lying Gladstone Qld Oz

PS Have been making our own button zincs... cost about 5 AU$ instead of 40+ from FOF

We have been using a 2 blade F O F on our saildrive for 2 years and have been very pleased. I understand some very solid upscale yachts are using them as standard equipement. So far no operational or maintainence issues. Good luck!
