I Hope This Negative Force Never Reaches My Wife !

So I had a conversation today with a boatyard owner (who happens to be a client of mine).

When I told her I was considering buying a 1989 32' Ericson, she told me that I was making a mistake.

She proceeded to tell me:
1) If the rigging hasn't been replaced since 1989 I was looking at $6,ooo to re-rig.
2) that a bottom job would cost $3000
3) that if there was a bent prop shaft (which there isn't) it would cost $1500
4) No insurance companies would even insure any boats east of Mobile once hurricane season starts
5) If there were any leaks in the port holes or hatches it would ruin the boat
6) that unless I had money to burn, I was crazy to buy a boat in this economy.

I am posting this because Im sure you have all had those negative people (posing as concerned friends) trying to talk you out of your boat.

Maybe I am crazy, but she is nothing but a hurdle on my way to the freedom of the sea!

1. I purchased complete new standing rigging for my 42' cutter for half that, including new chainplates, new Staloks, new turnbuckles, toggles, whole package. Of course I will install it myself but that ain't rocket science,.

2. What kind of bottom job is she talking about? I shaved the gelcoat off will grind, fill and fair the add 6-10 coats of Interlus 2000 epoxy barrier boat and three coats of bottom paint for under $6000.

3. OK, nothing here to worry about.

4. BoatUS is insuring my boat in FL. Just pay a premium for hurricane season.

5. Is the boat ruined? If not and you have leaks, fix them. No problem.

6. I think buying a boat in any economy is crazy. So? Welcome to the crazy club. It's fun.

bottom job on an ericson 35 in the most expensive place in usa is only 1800, including all new thru hull fittings..LOL... rerig of an ericson 35mII is 1500-3000 depending on rigger-- and ye can do it yerself for less than 500 dollars..LOL
now--i say-- BUY the ericson 32, fix what needs to be fixed, and sail the piss outta her to get out of hurrycame areas -- antigua,antilles,and curacao, by hurrycame season and ye should be fine... what ye think???


isnt difficult to rebed the ports in an ericson....

Interesting that boatyard owner would tell someone to not buy a boat that they haven't seen. You would think instead they would have dollar signs in their heads thinking they had another customer.

Before we slam her too much, consider the following:

1: You should always estimate how much your newly acquired boat will cost to fix up, then double it. Perhaps she has already done the doubling to save you the trouble.
2: As a yard owner, she must have seen hundreds of owners throw hundreds of thousands of dollars after their boats; perhaps she is watching your back.
3: Perhaps she is actually very cunning (she is, after all, a woman), and knows that if she tries to discredit the boat you are more likely to buy it. Does she have shares in any of the companies who will benefit: ie, riggers, painters etc...?

PS: Unless you have money to burn you are crazy to buy a boat. Full stop. In any economy!

I just wish to clarify this statement - there is nothing wrong with being crazy. I think perhaps it's a pre-requisite for buying a boat. If you're not crazy yet, it'll soon happen once you've bought one.
