But when I look at boats for sale it just "feels" like 30 footish boats are, to small, and I'm not drawn to them, no matter what they are. But when you get over forty feet, that seems like normal, like what is natural, like what has a real purpose and is just better and I'm drawn to them. But over fifty feet seems too big and bulky, and just overkill, unless your chartering or something. Thoughts........

Have you ever been on a 30'-35' boat? Pictures are meaningless unless you base them off of something tangible. Some 40' boats have the room of a 30fter and some 50fters have the room of an apartment......nothing is equal.

That's an interesting link - but then how do you describe the old VW Beetle? It's so ugly not even a mother could love it. It's so basic that it just barely works (try staying warm in one on a really cold winter day). The only claim to fame the beetle had was:

it worked every time. always started, always ran, cheap, simple (any moron could fix it) no extraneous parts (air-cooled engine)

People like what they like....everyone is different, with different needs and desires. That's why there's so many choices out there.

I agree! I started witha "small" boat of 39' as less than that was just something to sail, but not to live on. My current 43.5' OA boat has an so much more room and comfort over my Cal-39 that it is hard to believe! I would have gotten the bigger boat to start with if I hadn't read so many "go small" postings here.

Sometimes I play the "if I have the money to get anything what would I get" and as far as size it ends up being about 48'. After that the boat extra length doesn't offer anything to us as couple except for more speed in a boat with too much empty space inside.

But lots of older design 50'+ boats don't even have the space of a modern 42' boat.

I have nothing aganist the small boat people, if they like what they have that's great!
