When you go to any site on the net, a bunch of information is captured, including IP address, browser, and who knows what else.
As others have said, there is all kinds of nastiness out there in the internet
wild, most of which most people are unaware.
There are also companies that track this nastiness and will block access or require verification of humans before allowing access to a site.
I run the website for my YC, a small low traffic site. Everyday I get notified by my security software
of some sort of attack and often it is multiple times per day.
As annoying as the login might be, it is really for protection of the site and ultimately you and your computer data.
