The boat they used has been through a series of articles including de-masting, cap size and running aground.

Worth doing a search of "Yachting Monthly" on You Tube to see the series.

The first thing I did seeing the video was subscribing to the channel which I thought to contain the series.

Re: Hull Holes

As Sarafina mentioned, and I am very surprised the video did not emphasize, seems like the really good news here is jamming a cushion against the inside of the hull is surprisingly effective. Seems like a no brainer to always do that first to buy some time to use a secondary method such as fothering .

Re: Hull Holes

Thanks much for posting these video links. Instead of Giligan's Island reruns, I think the family and I will be watching these for the next family movie night. The dismasting one was good too. Question in my mind, among many, is how to replace four able bodied men, all who look like they are pretty experienced, with a late 40's couple, a 12 year old boy and a 15 year old boy.

When our mainsheet block blew apart duriung a blistering sail up the Jumentos a couple of years ago, just as we were navigating between a couple of reefs, we handled it pretty well, never dropping sail or slowing down much, and had a jury-rigged repair in place (that held for a couple thousand more miles) in less than 45 minutes. We felt pretty good about that. But holes in the hull, or broken masts? I'm sure we'd survive, and I'm sure we will learn a lot from these videos.

If your coastal cruising then as shown you are not going to get the mast back on board. Just think what has to be undone just to remove the boom and were its located on a mast now pointing downwards. Cut it away and motor home.

Offshore, first action, go put the kettle on and make a cup of tea.
