How to identify line

I have some 3/8 line I use for dock lines and it is 15 years old. This line is unbelievable it has survived 4 hurricanes' it imbedded its impression into the pilings and only once had to splice a chaff. It came from somewhere in Scandinavia feels more like a cotton fiber. Everyone on the dock looks at it in disbelief as do I. I would like to get more but don't know what it is. Does anyone know how I could identify it? Now the really unbelievable I found it in the trash about 30 years ago. Maybe someone from that area might be familiar with it, its white with a blue tracer.

Found in trash 30 years ago in a bag, but never used. OP used it for 15 years, so is calling it 15 years old.

kind of like getting a brand new refrigerator in your home....you have it...brand new...took it out of the box, but the date on the information plate says that it is 2 years old....it was sitting in a warehouse, is it new or 2 yrs old?

On feb 1, 2014, dealers sell 2013 cars. Buyers will buy at discounted prices. is the car new or 1 year old?

Life is confusing. I have to get an avitar and saying under it like Don Lucas.

just trying to rationalize and give benefit of doubt since you make a great point.

Re: How to identify line

Blue speck from Scandinavia is polyester (dacron).

Re: How to identify line

A 15 y.o. polyester dockline, properly sized, should still be as new. Unless you overstretched it (which may be the case if it feels like cotton).

Cotton is rough finish, polyester is slick (esp. the silke variety).

You can tell it is not nylon by the way it beads in the lighter flame.

Re: How to identify line

BTW nylon can be a better choice - it is more stretchy, making for some give with short dock lines. Sure, you have to replace it more often too.

Re: How to identify line

Found in trash 30yrs ago started using as dock lines 15yrs ago sorry for all the confusion. I remember seeing a tag on it when I found it but can't remember if it said Norway, Sweden some Scandinavian country. Feels more like cotton before being stretched it is stretched pretty well now and stiff until I washed it with softener. Maybe it is Dacron. I'd just like to be able to maybe send a piece somewhere to identify and get more. Not a JOKE either! Haven't you ever had something lay in your garage until you find it again and start using it.
