I've had excellent results with Collinite's #850 Metal Wax.

the best thing for me is diluted muriatic acid. vinegar is not strong enough. wipe it on and the rust disappears. murder on skin and clothing though

The best thing is Spotless Stainless as it passivates the stainless. Any acid will get rust of stainless especially oxalic acid (Barkeepers Friend).

Rust off stainless is a no brainer-use Bar Keepers friend. Cheap, enviormently friendly and easy to use. Bob

If not heavy rust, then 3m Finnesse it will work quite well. Although expensive it is great on the gel coat also. "one stop shopping". Probably a lot like some of the others mentioned.
If just surface rust, I would avoid acid, it can get rid of the rust but may make it return quickly. A real dilute acid like in some of the products not bad though. That's been my experience with acid anyway.

Finesse is an excellent polish, even for plastic windows and paint, not very aggressive though

Re: How to get rust off stainless steel

Dilute phosphoric acid usually sold as a branded rust remover. (Rust Buster in Australia). Works well, leave for 15 mins, wash off. Oxalic acid also works but seems to be a less lasting effect.

I like Muthers metal polish. It leaves a film (silicon I think) and stay shinny for a while.

That's what I use. One nice thing about it is it gets into nooks and crannies that paste products can't touch like screw threads and phillips screw heads.

x3

Spotless stainless works great... if you can keep it wet while it works.. after cleaning the rust, I follow up with a polish/wax (like Prism polish)

Home Depot (and others) carry a 3-pack of what feels like a rubber eraser marked fine medium coarse. I use only the fine. Just rub the surface and SS brown stains are gone.
