How often do you trim them sails?

Another 'retired' racer - but we never retire. I fuss constantly trying to get in the groove. Auto helm engaged and static conditions, I may not make adjustments for hours. Even under auto helm I may spend some time trimming to get the wheel TDC to minimize weather helm. Power consumption is reduced and usually the boat is faster.

Ignorant newbie here... trim alot. Mostly the light airs of so cal. Maybe cause I learned on race boats. Maybe because I've walked those 35 footers with my old cat 30 with blown out sails. Fun to pass the shiny new boat on my beater. . Maybe I need to find a race boat to crew on

LOL - I once took a lady out sailing: motored out, raised the sails, trimmed them in, locked the wheel and basically said "ok, where's the beer?" She said "Isn't there more to it than that?" I told her I could fiddle with the lines and move the wheel back and forth if she liked, but it wouldn't make the boat go much much difference.

If I can hear the sails or the autopilot working too hard its time to trim. So its all about the sound. Seems any noises that dont belong drive me to action faster than anything else. Tucking something in a cupboard to stop that can from rolling around or whatever.

Never was a racer. Always a cruiser. When I was younger and had a smaller boat I trimmed constantly. My wife called me Popeye the Sailor because I took it so seriously. Now I'm older, the sails are bigger, the wind is stronger, and I tweak less often. Still, I don't like to let them luff, or stall too much. I tend to reef early. I sail with main and self tacking staysail on a boom when guests are on board so I don't have to keep moving them to trim the Yankee sheets. My wife still calls me Popeye, but less often.

I like to see all the ticks flowing and everything looking just right and sail the ticks!! Hate the auto pilot doesn't steer to the headers or pick up the knocks, hell when I'm trimmed she sails herself for the most part! When the wife is on the helm, she doesn't sail by the ticks,I have to trim to where she is sailing no time for beer then. I guess no rest for the wicked!!
