What do you put if the answer is 1.5 or 5.5 years?

Re: How long have you owned your Boat(s) for? (POLL)

I just averaged my main boats and came up with 4 1/2 years. I buy a boat, fix it up, flip it. Then buy a house, fix it up and flip it. Then go back to a boat again.

Re: How long have you owned your Boat(s) for? (POLL)

7 wonderful years.

Learned:

what a 'boat buck' was in year 1
Not to shop at West Marine in year 2
That women don't share our passion in year 3
How to get struck by lightning in year 4
That I love all boats, 1 hull or 2 in year 5
That trawler owners are great people too in year 6
That I don't know all there is to sailing in year 7

Still going ...

Re: How long have you owned your Boat(s) for? (POLL)

I have only owned one boat... my first and likely my last. When I got Shiva in 1985 I imagined having the resources one day to get a larger boat... bigger boat more comfy and longer waterline and therefore faster passages and that safer too.

But whether by luck or accident I ended up with a boat that is perfect for my needs... and that includes single handing. And with that realization... that I cannot and don't want to depend on crew EVER.... my vision of a bigger boat faded because not only is it more maintenance work... and more expensive to fit out and repair etc... but the forces are greater and unless I move up to a much larger boat this one is quite fine.

The main hasn't gotten any bigger but I've gotten weaker and so now I am using an electric winch to hoist the sail and for 20 years an electric windlass to handle the anchoring. Trimming I can handle and so I'm kinda set and loving this boat. I can't see parting with it. I'm not a fickle lover.

Re: How long have you owned your Boat(s) for? (POLL)

My first boat was a (pooly) converted row-boat.

My second (in college) was an abandoned Lido 14 that proved a great boat after a few months of repairs.

My third was a similarly derelict 1957 era Thunderbird 26 (Ben Seaborn design).

My fourth--after the unfortunate death of a good friend--was a "the maintenance is never done" 1963 Rhodes Reliant that looked very yachtie and sailed very well; but, v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y (stately as described by a more patient dock-mate friend of mine).

My fifth boat was a 1976 Cal 2-29 that was very fast, easy to maintain, and that we kept for 26 years, until shortly after 9/'11.

My current and certainly "last" big boat is a 1986 First 42 that is pretty, very fast, and keeps my wife feeling safe and happy and me well engaged in "fixing"

When I get too weak to manage the First 42 I'll go back to the Lido.

When I die they can truss me up, lay me down in her bottom, set the main; and, send me off to sea in the "Viking" manner.

7 boats in 34 years is about 4.5 years each. Some one year though.

Lets exclude Tenders and Canoes, even if your main vessel!

With a bit of luck you should be able to vote multiple times (for each boat owned).

You didn't include 1 - 2 years, and I've had this boat 19 months ...
