Hi SeaGypsyWoman.
It's a little contrived, but you can always look up a location in an online encyclopedia to find its lattitude and longitude (or do a
Google search for your desired locations including the words "lattitude" and "longitude").
Once you know the lattitude and longitude of your starting point and
destination, you can then use a site like this one:
http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/2265/gcsail.htm
This is how I usually calculate rough distances without a chart.
Hope this helps.
