I've got the day shapes for NUC, but not the lights. I suppose you could hoist three lanterns on a halyard.

I've never shown NUC, but I believe that it's definitely the right signal for hove to and asleep even if that doesn't entirely fulfill the letter of the law on NUC.

Class "A" AIS would also let us show nav status that way. Shame Class "B" doesn't.

You can post all your coulduv, woulduv, shoulduv but.. I heave to with normal nav lights.. port, stbd and stern.. then get my head down.
Speed is irrelevant.. what is, is a good radar echo and a reasonably steady heading..

So far so good over many miles and a few oceans.

I have been NUC. We spent 1.5 days adrift in the fog and no wind at the entrance to Juan de Fuca right at the start of the TSS. A fishing net had destroyed our transmission in the middle of the Pacific High. We has neither the lights or the day shapes, but Tofino Traffic warned the incoming and outgoing traffic of our predicament and location.

Sort of a mute point really. I can't imagine being so exhausted that I have to sleep, but being willing to drag out the sea anchor and deploy it, especially knowing how much of a pain it will be to get it back aboard and stow.
I can see deeply reefing the sails checking the AIS alarm is on, setting a Radar guard zone, checking the autopilot is on course and settling down on the cockpit cushion for a little nap though.

And those are the proper lights for a sailing vessel underway.

That's sho nuf NUC all right.

How did you get out of it? Wind came up?

NUC day shape is just two anchor balls. Add two motoring cones and you've got RAM, but there would be no occasion for showing that.

This definition is not included in the colregs. I note that Cockcroft defines being at anchor as "the anchor is down and holding" - a para-anchor is by its nature "down and holding" without being affixed to the seabed.
