How did you choose your boat name?
Our new to us, 1981 Hunter 27 Cherubini, is currently named "Aquaholic." While its a cute name, its WAY to literal for me and I find it very generic.
I've been studying water deities, and things associated with water, but I'm coming up with nothing. I could go with any number of water deities, but there's usually a list a mile long of boats already named that.
My partner wanted to name it something like "S/V Couldn't Wait" to depict my complete impatience when it came to buying a boat. He also suggested something like "Retired on duty", which is just way to generic.
Did you name your boat something original? Or did you try to be different?

Re: How did you choose your boat name?
I'm in no way superstitious and am a staunch Calvinist.
When it comes to naming boats I don't want to anger The Great Commodore of the seas with a stupid or arrogant name. Too many boats and ships have "gone to the bottom" because of their awful or belligerent names. Think I'm kidding? In the ancient Caldean language the word for satanic is...Titanic.
And the ritual of renaming or naming of a boat must be done with sobriety and reverence. Of course the party is for afterwards.
That being said...our dinghy is named "Amundsen" and the "yacht"....a West Wight Potter 15 is named.....Beatrix. As in Beatrix Potter.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?
We are two gay guys, so I was thinking about the "S/V Ungud".
Ungud is an Australian Aboriginal serpent God, who is both male and female, and is commonly associated with rainbows, fertility, and the erections of the Shaman tribe.
Seriously. Does it get more perfect than that?

Re: How did you choose your boat name?
I just went through this. For me the name has to sound good, easy to say on the radio, 2-3 syllables, look good on the boat and feel good to you and not already been taken. Also ,and this as well as the above is all subjective ,it needs meaning, something that resonates with you.

Definitely don't go with a name that requires explanation. That gets old fast!

Re: How did you choose your boat name?
Driving North thru L.A. heading to the bay to get my boat while thinking hard about a new name. Passed an exit, "Roy Rogers Lane" and it hit me! "Happy Trails". Love the name. Someday I'll have it set up and play "Happy Trails" with cockpit speakers while entering and leaving an anchorage.

All I can say as a trusty shellback of king Neptune's court.
Just follow a proper denaming and renaming ceremony and dont forget the appropriate libations to king neptunis rex.
Denaming

Re: How did you choose your boat name?
I'm French, from south Louisiana, so something like "S/V Vitre" gets my attention.
Vitre, is French for window pane. So our boat can literally be our "window" to the world.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?
Oddly I buy boats based on the name that is on the stern. If the boat is a good one and I like the name, I buy it (True!)
So much easier that way and no issues with bad juju.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?
It is important that it means something to you, but also has to be easy to say and hear over the radio. We volunteer as radio officers for the NSW Marine Rescue and there are so many boats that call up that we have no idea how to spell or even pronounce their name because it is too complex. Very annoying and potentially unsafe in an emergency.
Our yacht is Catlypso which is a combination of cat and calypso. Calypso was Jacques Cousteau's boat's name and we are scuba divers. Our tender is Thunderbird 2. Fans of the UK TV show Thunderbirds will recall that T2 carried Thunderbird 4 which went underwater.
Our power boat is called Makcat, for Michael And Kelly cat.
Hope this helps.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?
My boat now I am going to keep the name she came with, but my old boat I renamed based on a fever dream I had while sick with the flu when I was a bit younger. It was quite a vibrant and meaningful dream and one part involved flying over a beautiful sparkling estuary, with trees showing all colors of all seasons, and walking in the shallows was the only other living thing, a Snowy Egret... which became my first boat's name, "Egret"... so that was an easy and close-to-the-heart name change for me and that little boat served me very well for ten years!
