Re: How did you choose your boat name?

The best names I ever saw were two recreational fishing boats here owned by two buddies called 'clam' and 'chowder'. Heard one call the other on the radio one day

'clam clam clam this is chowder'

d'awwwwww

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

Thinking about the OP's comments on wishing to name his boat and simultaneously celebrate his same-sex relationship. There are many ways this could be done.

Saint Sebastian is historically a gay icon, and so is Bette Davis. Both would be classy names for a boat.

Another simple way would be to name the vessel after a famous gay person, for example, Oscar Wilde, Langston Hughes, Alvin Ailey, Greta Garbo, Lord Byron. Or even Anderson Cooper.

Or Stonewall, for obvious reasons.

Or you could pick a hero from the landmark decision by the Supremes that finally granted gay people the same marriage rights as straight people; there are many heroes in that story:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obergefell_v._Hodges
You could even call her "Fourteenth Amendment" which contains the Due Process and Equal Protection clauses that were the basis of the decision.

I agree with many commenters that the name should be easy to understand over the radio.

Best of luck in your boat-naming endeavors!

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

The boat name has to be:
Short
Clear to understand in the, sometime, jammed VHF traffic
Very easy to spell
Easy to memorize for the crew
Easy to memorize (½ hour) for the marina employees

so ..... take it easy!
Greeting from ARIEL

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

Well there are plenty of stupid names of boats in my marina (San Diego), for example "Farmer in the Swell!" or how 'bout "More fun than Cleveland!" Can you imagine being in distress and calling the Coast Guard with names like that?

I believe a good boat name should be one word, and have something to do with the owner and sailing or the sea.

I'm a retired News Anchorman, my boat's name is "Airtime." (It's the movement of air that creates the miracle of sailing, and also has the double meaning of my former profession. )

I wish I would of thought of it, but it was suggested by an old boat mechanic while commissioning my boat.

Fun thread. We're Pink Floyd fans, so Echoes was an easy choice given the lyrics. The pink pig we fly from the signal halyard is a new addition.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

I wanted "Arrakis" as in Dune novel before finding a boat. I found the boat that was named "Azawakh" which as 3 syllabs and sounds a bit like "Arrakis", so I kept it as is. Nothing to do with superstition, I am not superstitious, because it's giving you bad luck...

Azawakh is a type of north african hound dog train to chase antelops...and the boat is a "Lévrier" (hound dog in french...), so could not be more appropriate !

Other "Lévriers" of the serie have been also named according the hound dogs breed as "Sloughi" or "Barzoï"...

The previous and first owner had 2 other boats he named also "Azawakh II" and "III", although they had nothing linked with the hound dogs.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

I live in the Pacific Northwest so named my boat Sedna (Sierra Echo Delta November Alpha) after the Native Goddess of Sea Mammals... I had a couple other ideas, but they weren't phonetic spelling and were too difficult to understand on the radio.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

My time in Hawai'i was an important phase in my life. So I found a couple of online sites with Hawai'ian words. Went through and found a few balancing the meaning of them (and how that related to me in my opinion) and also for simplicity in radio communications.

I also set the home port as Hilo, HI. Wasn't going to do California as that's my native state and not a biggest fan of Jacksonville (where I am currently and where I bought the boat).

Floyd fan here too, but my wife said that "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" was absolutely NOT going to happen.

So now we are thinking about "Time".

Nice! "Groove Pict" would be fun too.

I also like "Heart of the Sun."

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

Being my Name is James Cook,
Name for my next boat "Freelove" first ship Cat. James Cook sailed on as an apprentice in 1747 or "Friendship" the last ship he sailed on in 1755 as a mate before he joined the Navy.

His other ships were Discovery, Adventure, Resolution, Endeavour.
I was look at a 37' Endeavour as possible my next boat.
Do you think naming a 37' Endeavour "Endeavour" might be confusing?
