Re: How did you choose your boat name?

And, since I have the same name as a little-known privateer who sailed out of Bermuda in the late 1600's, I've thought of using his ship's name.

But somehow "Marigold" just doesn't do it for me, and as a name for a pirate ship ...

My partner wanted to name it something like "S/V Couldn't Wait" to depict my complete impatience when it came to buying a boat. He also suggested something like "Retired on duty", which is just way to generic.

Did you name your boat something original? Or did you try to be different?
Named after my old man..
My father's name is William, his mother Frances Shumm Culhane was very poor, lived in NJ in low income housing, her family however was not, all very wealthy, millionaires even, from owning candy factories in NYC. So big that my nephew found an invoice on ancestry for a candy order of 29,000 pounds of candy. She was the black sheep of the family I guess. Lived in poor housing in nj.. I imagine my father received some help from that side of the family cause he raised 7 kids and sent us to catholic school. His mother wrote a story and sent it to Disney years ago. She received 35. dollars for it, that was probably big money back 80-90 years. Not a shred of proof or a copy of the check. (no xerox machines back then) The man that stole the story is well known for plagiarizing in his career and the names like Josephine and Charlie in the book are my great aunt and uncle. .My old man is Willy WonkaClick image for larger version

He seemed to win every race for two or three years, for what ever reason he decided to change the name on his boat, many club members told he that could bring bad luck to the boat. He called us superstitious. He has not won a race since. ??

That is a cool history to have powsmias. It makes the Mayflower in my family history seem very run of the mill.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

One thing you could do is search the national databases for names of interest to you. It’s nice to have a unique name to Register (in Canada) or Document (USA). You can also use the databases as ways of getting ideas of what other people are using.

The Canadian Vessel Registration database is here:
Vessel Registration Query System

Canada demands unique names for registered vessels, which is why you see so many “II” and “III” after names.

The US Vessel Documentation Center database can be searched here:
Office of Science and Technology

I believe the US does allow different boats to use the same name.

My first boat was called 'Double B'.. I was Broke and Brainless.
I chose 'Moondance' because that's when I like to dance.
I chose 'Kali' because she was a beautiful, lethal goddess.
I stayed with 'Deep Water' because that's where I was headed...
Just a random sample of choices of the 14 boats I've owned.

Mike - I've been wondering about this and having trouble finding a clear answer: Does Canada require a unique name in the country, or just for the specific port of registry?

My understanding is that it must be a unique name, regardless of port. I know for certain they ask for three name options when submitting a new request for registration. I can’t find clear confirmation in a quick scan of the site though (as you say). Must be there in the regs or legislation.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

I could have sworn that I'd seen examples of the same name from two different ports, but now can't find any, so it may well be for the whole country.

In Canada the name must be unique regardless of port. Even dissimilar spelling of like sounding names is prohibited. You may have the same name as someone else with a number suffix i.e. "Aquaholic II". I deal with this all the time as a Transport Canada Appointed Tonnage Measurer.

"DIRT FREE" as in living free of the dirt, currently in the Sea of Abaco.

You could search the database (link I posted) to confirm this if you can remember the name. I’ve been playing with the database just now, plugging in some common names, and I’ve yet to find a double. So I’m pretty sure … but you should confirm it officially if it matters to your choice.

I think you can have the same name for provincially licensed boats.

(Is this correct BP?)

I all may lead to nought.

Yes, no restriction on licensed boats in Canada.

PS. Licensed boats are federally licensed, not provincially.
