Re: How Close to Shore Is Too Close While Hove to ?

I have no ideal want it means. Must be one of those acronyms learned people put unlearned people in there place with. You share the same mindset as the Tempest ?

Maryland to Miami should be five days offshore but inside the Gulf Stream. Motoring down the ICW will take three or four weeks. Most people average around 50 miles per day on the ICW. Commitment and preparation will let you drive that up to nearly 75 miles per day if you want to push and if you don't have to stop too often for fuel.

You'll have to work your way around the Keys into the Gulf of Mexico. The rhumb line - wind permitting - makes sense to me there. Watch out for oil rigs. Most are lit up like Christmas trees and hard to miss but some in stage of decommission aren't well lit. Radar helps. Only takes one to ruin your day.

Thanks. Great help here with specifics.I can now move my exspectations to 30-35 days. We will work hard to get to SC, then there will not be as much sense of urgency.

Depends on how fast the boat will drift, what the bottom / shore config is, how much current there is and where it goes, etc..

A weather system may stop unexpectedly and what you judged to be a 6 hours' blow will keep you there for two days.

IMHO many boats drift at +1 knot hove too some us fast as at 2.5 knots.

Is the Okechobee waterway open?

I have heard the Rhumb line from Fl to TX discouraged for two reasons. 1. The Gulf currents. 2. The rhumb line takes you throught the bulk of the offshore oil rigs.

Going on a more west, then straight north will miss the bulk of the rigs until you aproach the coast. A map of Gulf currents will help in taking an optimum route.

I can't speak for the east coast, but Texas right now is mostly entering fall weather patterns, we have had a couple of good northerns with rapidly dropping temperatures, rain, and storms. This pattern will continue once every 5-11 days from now on until spring. Some of the bigger fronts may stall and come back as returning warm fronts, also bringing higher winds and rain.

I would consider following Zeehags route as she recently made this passage.

From N.O. LA to Houston is an easy trip in the ICW with mostly protected water.

Good point, capn billl. There's a big "Loop Current" that dominates the Gulf, plus some swirls and whirls here and there that should be taken into account when route planning.

NOAA has a website with a current prediction model that could be helpful.

I think his mast is probably too high for the Okeechobie. IIRC, there's a fixed bridge with about 49' of clearance that makes it off-limits for larger sailboats. Key West via the Hawk Channel is about the only option.

as long as you correct before the louisville slugger comes out you are fine lol..... sent ye a pm---and i am ALL female.......

i understand there is a man on okeechobee with water barrels and takes 150 dollars to make ye fit under bridge.......how high is your mast-- you may wish to consider finding this fella. i didnt do this part of trip. just heard a lot about it. if you are tooohigh, mightbe a better alternative to sail around fla...... will take a week, anyway, with good weather. by now you willhave had some heavy water experience. keep on keeping on. from dry tortugas to tampa bay is a good run. gulf of mexico is like sailing in norge washer. see my pm. from so fla to even to pascagoula you may be able to stay on a rhumb line offshore-- no rigs except lighted buoys for weather. ye shouldnt hit em.. well marked. the blind rigs dont come until ye get the other side of mississippi river....if you go the way i write to ye.
make sure you check your weather more than once daily. it changes very fast.
