Re: How close have you come to dying?

Been there a couple of times, but never while in a boat. The most significant near meeting with the bright light happened 10 years ago while I was moving a 700 pound grand piano down an outdoor staircase with only one fellow helping me. The weight was too much when we tipped it to 45 degrees, and I went tumbling down the stairs. When I reached the landing at the same time as the piano, it tipped over on top of me, completely covering me. There was a small cavity between the piano plate, and strings along with the edge of the keyboard getting hung up on the lowest stair which allowed me to escape unhurt. That was the last piano I ever moved.

I almost ended up on that "TV show 1000 Ways To Die," and winning the 2004 Darwin Award. Very, very close call.

If you operate at an average safety level, your chance of surviving is average. If your luck is worse than average, then add that on.

I figure on most days I'm a few feet and a fraction of a second from death. Don't the rest of you drive your car anywhere?

I feel like that sitting front of the compuer right now. People die there in big offices and arn't noticed for days. They sit there just as animated as when alive.

Managed to do that just a couple of months back. Five ribs with multiple fractures, broken and dislocated clavicle, grade 3 separation of the AC joint, torn rotator and minor internal injuries. Just luck I didn't break my neck or back and my head hit a patch of soft dirt so no concussion.

The old story your life passes before your eyes. I didn't see my life but the fall was very slow motion and I had plenty of time to look over my shoulder (I feel backwards) to see the ground coming and to reflect on how badly I had screwed up, how bad it was going to be when I hit the ground and wonder if I would live through the process.

Same here. I guess it just wasn't my time.

Hope mine doesn't take that long. Being disabled is getting old.

That's what happened when I fell off a ladder a few years ago trimming a tree. (Damn, am I starting to see a pattern here? Maybe time to stay away from high places). The last thing I remembered was moving just one rung higher so I could reach that last limb. The next thing I know I was laying on the ground with a passerby standing over me asking me if I was OK. Have no idea how long I was lying there before he came by. That time I escaped with nothing more than a headache for a couple of days.

Re: How Close have you come to Dying?

Of the dozen or so times I've been close to dying the most interesting was in a hot tub with a hooters girl drunk off my,,,,, ,,,,,the heating element decided then was a good time to crack. And GFCI failed allowing raw current into the tub,,,,, not sure which almost. killed me, but would have been a great way to have been remembered.

Re: How Close have you come to Dying?

There's some good ones in here too. http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ad-111664.html

For the most part I've done more of the almost killing than the almost dying (speaking body wise).

Re: How Close have you come to Dying?

I came down with what I thought was the flu in 2008. Wife finally made me go to Doctor and from there to the hospital. Then straight to intensive care. Apparently I had contracted erlichiosis from a Tick bite. ICU started intensive antibiotics treatment and then my heart just stopped. It took a couple of minutes to get it going again and then it stopped again.
After the third stoppage they put in a temp pacemaker and in 3 days it calmed down and 3 weeks later I was good to go.
I am no longer afraid of death. As a matter of fact the feeling is quite nice. My Admiral is convinced the experience has made me much more carefree and easy to live with.

Re: How Close have you come to Dying?

Went on a boat ride with a couple of men in uniform.... No one expecting me to come back.

But here I am.....

....no violence involved (just a longgg boring story).

Happy days

(To be fair, they had a point).

Re: How Close have you come to Dying?

about 8 years old. My buddy and me were playing running thru a big culvert under a road. I ran out of the culvert and immediately up to run across the road to surprise him on the other end. a car doing probably 45 brushed my t shirt with the mirror.

another, not me... two people I know have got Meningitis in recent years. Both started with an ear ache and one day later they were in the hospital. One in a coma for 4 days. Both survived. One barely.

Re: How Close have you come to Dying?

Back in 1963, Somehow I fell overboard?????? My mother, a swimmer eventually saw me and my girl friend both drowning, and got us both back in the boat. That's all I remember as in 97 I had another close call and lost oxygen to the brain, loosing memory.
