I am not trying to say the pipe is terrible and that you should get rid of it. HR and many other boats have a similar system, but it's not doing the job you think its doing.
yes, if you have the track set all the way forward, or if your tacking.

The pipe is to stop abrasion/chafe on the genoa sheets and perhaps the sail itself if it can overlap when hard on the wind and tacking. Don't start adding pipe to other areas thinking it is protecting the standing rigging from corrosion.

The ones I'm familiar with have caps that the shrouds pass through. They are not real snug but I wouldn't say they entirely flow freely. It is just a habit i picked up.

here is the yacht, before i ever worked on it, as you can see, they have them on every single piece of standing rigging, even on the boomkin.

on another note, the rigger has worked hard to convince me we are capable of the same job. so last night i did the inspection, as instructed.
my report is this:
out of 9 stays, 0 had cracks. 0 had signs of corrosion.
i will chalk this up to having pvc pipes covering the lower parts, and turn buckles. i need to replace the one wire on my boomkin, and thats all.
you checked the terminals at the top of both masts, and the wire where it goes over the ends of the spreaders?
intermediate shrouds on the mast?

it is more common to have rigging fail at the top and intermediate levels ,than at deck level.

This is funny!!!

Just wait until you've got saltwater running down your rigging from spray and et me know how the PVC is doing keeping the splashes off the swages.

that is not at all true. every professional opinion i have read says this:

most rigging failures almost always happen on deck.

this does not happen very often in long island sound. plus the boat has not been sailed much in the past 10 years. maybe once a year.

but if you havent been up your masts and inspected "ALL" the terminals and tangs, then dont cry when you lose your rig.

have you done anything about replacing the rotted out boomkin on the stern?

Hi, atoll,

Yeah, that piece of timber could certainly at least have the ice-pick test!

Everybody, apologies here, this is not intended as a thread hijack, but sabray doesn't accept PMs, and I wanted to say to him and whoever else may be interested:

Great story about the lifeline failure; sure are glad you stayed away from in on the trip! Bet you are, too.

We have actually changed to Dyneema lifelines, and we lash them. I trust the lashing way better than swaged lifeline fittings, simply because they're so easy to see, and renew. It's a solution to consider, as carefully done, it looks seamanlike, is very strong, and relatively inexpensive.

I went up today. The rigging ends at the spreaders. All are flawless.
Yes. Not going to use the mizzen going downwind.

well it's your tea party!
it would be a good idea to recheck every thing at your first stop along the way for broken 1x19 where the wire exits the terminals once it has had a chance to work a bit.
take some glavanised 7x9 ,eyes and crosby clamps for running repairs.
and might be an idea to cross brace the boomkin temporaraly.

best of luck
