Hot wiring your hand rails?

About 8 to 10 years ago, someone on this forum I think, suggested that you could hook up a hot wire to your hand railing to help secure your boat while you are at anchor. Well, as I remember, that post caused a hell storm of yes you can and no you can't. The conversations got pretty ugly at times and I don't want to cause any kind of problems now, but there was some guy in Australia that did it and was selling the product for boaters. Well we left on our world cruse before the hot wire post played out. Does anyone remember what the outcome was and who the guy in Australia was? I used the search mode and it didn't come up with anything, so I was just wondering what ever happened to the debate. If I remember correctly, I think Gordmay wrote a very convincing post of why it could not be done and a few that said it could be done and few that were concerned about the legality of such an item. Just curious.

Our auto teacher in grade school taught us how to wire a cars door handles, so that you got a pretty good jolt if you tried to open the doors when it was armed.Obviously this would only work on older cars with steel metal door handles. But from what I remember you hooked battery power thru a coil to the door handles. Cant remember more than that. But the theory is there and could work on a boats rails. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help. Sounds like a good idea.

If you feel you have to go to extremes to protect yourself and your boat, maybe you need to get back up on the porch where its nice and safe..

Randy: not interested in using it, I was just wondering if there was ever a conclusion to that post. That post long ago caused quite a lot of angst in the forum and your post is reminiscent of posts long ago. Just asking!

Let's put it this way, I bet that anyone who has tried this soon regretted it and removed them after they grabbed the lifelines by mistake coming back late from the pub.

Im surprised nobody has thought of hooking up guns to there life lines yet. Some pirate grabs the life line , it pulls on the trigger and wham. One dead pirate. Or boat owner coming back from the pub.

A good electric fence charger would be a decent deterrent I would think. If a crook gets a hold of it and falls in the water or something just tell the judge the electric "fence" was to keep your dog from eating him

How about hot wiring a guillotine to the rail and then while the intruder gets a shock, they are beheaded? Off with their heads!
When I was a kid, my cousin hot wired the door handle on his car by hooking it up to a separate coil and it would discharge when anyone touched the handle, of course until the battery was drained, which would work the first time someone touched the door knob after that you could drop a wire on the handle and let it ground out until the battery was dead then enter the car, you would need a spare battery to start the car of course. Or just leave the owner with a dead car.
