Honda 2000i Companion

The regular Honda EU2000i has 2 standard plugs limited to 13.3amps, but the Honda EU2000i Companion has the 30amp RV/Marine plug. This allows I believe 26.6amps.

Do most boaters get the Companion so they can run AC or other higher amp appliances? What about a watermaker (not DC), Bauer Junior compressor, or washing machine?

Re: Honda 2000i Companion

You only get 26 amps if you parallel two Honda's together.
Output for both is the same, but you do get a nice plug you can plug your shore power cord into, but you lose the 12V charging circuit, that circuit is pretty much useless, but it's a nice way to easily add an hourmeter.

Re: Honda 2000i Companion

I just made an adapter cord so it plugs into the boats marine inlet.

Re: Honda 2000i Companion

You seem to imply that since the companion unit has a 30 amp outlet, that it puts out 30 amps by itself? not true
The Honda 2000i and 2000i companion are exactly the same output, its only the plug configuration that differs. The 30amp outlet that comes built into the companion is only good for 30amps when two 2000i units are connected together with a parallel cable kit..
You can accomplish the same by connecting two 2000i regular units together using an external parallel cable & 30 amp connector accessory kit. Just depends what you want to plug into them, in some cases having more of the 20amp duplex outlets is more useful than having the 30amp builtin with less 20 amp duplexes. But in either option, the rated output is exactly the same for either style unit 2000/1600W for a 2000i regular or a 2000i companion, or 2 units together gives you 4000/3200W. 16.7 amps max (short term) - 13.3 amp continuous, per unit.
Most AC units will require at least a 3000 or 2 parallel 2000 units. Although you can run some small room size AC units off a single 2000i gen with no other loads. It all comes down to knowing the starting & running loads for the devices you want to power with the genny.

I did not know this. So isn't the Companion model still more convenient on most boats with 30 amp sockets so the regular AC plugs on the boat will work?

Re: Honda 2000i Companion

The 30 amp outlet does eliminate the need for an adapting pigtail...but pigtails are cheap and handy anyway with portable units (twist lock to straight three prong-watch your amp ratings). I have multiple Yamaha genny's and love them. I use the Honda 2000i at work though and it's a great unit too.

Re: Honda 2000i Companion

The companion model can handle a slightly higher startup load without tripping. We proved it both with a rooftop camper ac and a marine ac unit. The companion model had no issue with startup loads and our regular EU model tripped the breaker every time. Guessing then draw was somewhere in the 13-15 amp range.
