Help in identifying boat

Hello fellow CF members!

I have recently been offered a Maxi 77. I am deeply considering it as she’s just a cosy little boat!

However, I have also just learnt from my Cousin that she has a boat laying in one of the marinas “near by” and would like for me to check up on her. She is living overseas and has not seen the boat in over 5 years! She does not have any knowledge about sailing (she does not even know how to sail hahaha), and does not even know what boat it is.

Anyways, I need some help in identifying her before i make the 2 hour drive down! All i know is that she is a 40 foot ketch. I do not know the year, make or model, but she looks beautiful! I do have some pics i managed to grab off her Facebook.

Any guesses on what she may be?

Re: Help in identifying boat

Looks like she is wooden and old.... Huge cost to restore in all probability if she's been neglected.

Good luck

Re: Help in identifying boat

The boat in the photos could be known by several names, but is probably based on one of the following designs. You will need to know the length of the boat, and a better photo showing the cabin top (and number of portlights or “windows” in the trunk cabin, the part that sticks up above the deck).

Here is what I suspect that boat to be:

Mariner 35. (Wood hull)
MARINER 35 (GARDEN) sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com
Hull Type: Long Keel Rig Type: Masthead Ketch
LOA: 34.50' / 10.52m LWL: 26.75' / 8.15m
Beam: 10.25' / 3.12m Listed SA: 690 ft2 / 64.1 m2
Draft (max.) 5.00' / 1.52m Draft (min.)
Displacement: 20000 lbs./ 9072 kgs. Ballast:
Sail Area/Disp.1: 15.04 Bal./Disp.: Disp./Len.: 466.46
Designer: Clair Oberly/William Garden
Builder: Far East Yachts (JAP)
Construction: Wood Bal. type: Iron
First Built: 1964 Last Built: 1970

Note: Also sold as the FAR EAST 35. (by George B. Walton Inc. USA)
Replaced by the fiberglass hulled MARINER 36 in 1972.

Another possibility (determined by better photos and length):

Mariner 40
MARINER 40 (GARDEN) sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com
Originally built in wood.

Note from Sailboatdata:
The earliest version of the MARINER 40 was built of wood in 1965 and then later in fiberglass with wood decks and superstructure. Far East Yachts built the boats, first in Japan (95 hulls) and then in California. Later the molds for the MARINER 40 and MARINER 36 were purchased by another company and construction continued for some years at the Ta-Yang yard in Taiwan.

Another possibility, some variation of the following:

Formosa 41 (ketch) (or from that line)
FORMOSA 41 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com

That design (linked above) is also known as the YANKEE CLIPPER 41. ATLANTIC CLIPPER. Similar to CT-41, SEA WOLF 40, SEA TIGER 41.

"SEA WOLF 40 is the name of the original Garden design built under the supervision of Bill Hardin at the Ta Chiao yard in Taiwan. A number of copies were built by different yards in Taiwan under a number of other names. These include: SEA TIGER 41, CT41, ISLAND TRADER 41, TRANSWORLD 41, CLIPPER 41, ATLANTIC CLIPPER 41 etc"

^one of these.
