HELP anchor rode splice OK if end unravelled

When I spliced my anchor rode around the thimble one of the ends unraveled.

My question is can I leave this alone or does the unraveling make the anchor
rode loose enough strength so I have to do this again ?

Thanks

jim

A photo would really help. If you're using three strand nylon and one strand is not performing its job then you've decreased its strength by one third. Any reason why you can't just start fresh and splice the thimble in properly? Practice makes perfect.

There is also the option of splicing direct to the chain and skipping the thimble altogether. A loose thimble can cut the rope. Just as strong and smoother.

I am with Thinwater, splice rope straight onto chain, check that splice yearly or better still, redo that splice every year. Here is "how to" Chain Splice | How to Splice Rope to Chain | Knots
The photo provided by Thinwater shows the tools, except...... a word of warning: when using too much amber liquid (a la Black Toad), the quality of the splice will be reduced

No, the Black Toad is a nice, thick, viscous lubricant that makes the whole process much easier Everything seems to slide that much more smoothly. At least it sure feels that way after use

one of the ends unraveled?
If the strand lost it twist while you were splicing, you would have retwisted it while you were splicing, right?
If the strand is unraveled where it sticks out of the rope after the splice it won't look very nautical, but it won't weaken the splice.

A pic would be nice. I am not sure what is meant by unraveled?

Re: HELP anchor rode splice OK if end unravelled

Not wishing to sound anal or a spoilsport BUT.....some years ago a friend and I were each building wooden boats....in the summer....assisted by a very nice dark viscous lubricant. Checking our work the next day one could easily see the impact of the lubricant as we "progressed" thru the day.......MOST NEGATIVELY !!! :-)
Bill.

I agree about splicing straight into the chain.. much stronger and more secure if properly done and.. its not a complex job.. just tug each splice nice n tight as you taper it down.
But.. into the chain not a lazy eye splice..

All kidding aside, I find that a single beer actually improves my quality of work for certain simple, routine tasks, because it dramatically improves my level of patience. Sitting on the tramp with a cold beer at hand... what's the hurry? Overindulgence, on the other hand, bollixes everything up. Just one beer, no less, and no more.

Again, I am not sure what unraveling means? If one of the three stands just got loose retwist it and go on with your slice. The most important thing with a thimble is to insure you have it tight around the thimble, the first third lay is the bitch. Don't be afraid to make the splice long and defiantly taper the end of the splice. Roll it as you go. A good spice is stronger than the rope.

What's a lazy eye splice? I also splice my rode directly into the chain - I ran one strand through the last line in one direction, and the other two strands in the opposite direction, then bent them back and wove them into the standing part in the usual manner. It looks like your picture but I'd put a few more tucks in it, at least 6. Is that lazy or what? BTW is there any use in tapering that splice other than for looks? The splice itself should never be put through the chain gypsy or on the windlass anyway.

Re: HELP anchor rode splice OK if end unravelled

cut it off , splice it around a larger thimble at least 6 wraps , use a shackle to the chain

Re: HELP anchor rode splice OK if end unravelled

Looks like you are splicing directly onto the chain. I like to sleep at night so I'd advise you to cut it off, heat the strand ends when you cut them, and re-splice it.

Re: HELP anchor rode splice OK if end unravelled

A second look; the way you've started the splice looks a little iffy to me. I feed two strands through the chain link, in one direction, and the remaining strand from the other. I anchor out about 100 nights per year and the one thing I have noticed is that the splice to chain seems to have less chafing than the thimble approach. I also use plenty of tucks; 4 full strands tucks, 3 at 60% and 3 at 30% of strand thickness.
