Thumbs up Re: Have I Bumped my Head?

I am 56 and my wife is 59. We are just getting into sailing. We bought a boat last Oct. at The boat show">Annapolis Boat Show. We just had the Coast Guard inspection and are ready for the maiden voyage this weekend. We have stopped listening to family and friends. Sitting on a computer and managing a Facebook profile is not how we plan to spend our retirement. I say go for it...but that's just my opinion. Good Luck.

Hey, I'm all about telling other people what they should be able to afford!

For all we know he may have a terminal illness and have 5 years to live.

What was that comment about "game of the rich"? Let's just assume he's rich eh?

I have spent months "on the couch" studying sailing, boats, lingo, these threads. I have bought many books which I have read. I am talking to an owner about buying a boat. All without "going sailing".

Which drives certain folks bat crazy.

If I end up with a boat first, then I will learn to sail on my own boat. Sounds like a plan. Maybe not the plan others here would use but a plan none the less.

So do whatever you want to do. Don't let family or friends tell you that you are crazy.
It's not that crazy. If you know the "rules of the road" sailing itself is an art. Just don't believe because you are sailing the container ship is the burdened vessel.

I promise to run a big flashing beacon for the first year I am out there.

Allowing trolls or flamers to continually inspire you to defend your position just feeds the flame and inspire more snide comments.

The OP asked a valid question and received on topic replies.

Try not to feed the trolls.

Re: Have I Bumped my Head?

Go for it, just make sure you get some good training first. My wife and I had never been sailing until we were in our early 50's. We took private lessons for several days and then started sailing locally. Fifteen years and three boats later, we will be taking off for the Bahamas this fall. I will never forget our instructor who asked me"aren't you a little old to start this, and crank winches"? I said that if you are physically able, the only obstacle is between your ears! Once again, go for it, in the end you don't regret so much what you did as much as what you did not do!

Don't think that will help? It's a bitch to turn those ships. A radar reflect is good. Clorox bottles don't show up well. Short story, heard the female Master of a Maersk Lines ship give someone that news on 16. I guess today AIS may be a good investment.

"we would purchase a sail boat and spend winters in Florida. I don't think we are crazy, but "

You would voluntarily spend time in Florida when you had a boat and the opportunity to be elsewhere?
You're mistaken, you are not only crazy, you can be committed under Florida's Baker Act.

By all means, go to Florida. Buy a boat there. Then GET OUT while you still can.

If you are going to bump your head on anything, let it be a sailboat boom.

Re: Have I Bumped my Head?

The amount of support has been amazing. It's really nice to know that there are other people in the world who understand that life has an expiration date so we need to get as much enjoyment out of it as we can before that "unknown" date arrives. Thank you

Re: Have I Bumped my Head?

Have you thought about renting a boat, or going on a crewed charter? You can do a lot of charter sailing for what a boat costs.
